Does it try and turn with the starter and it doesn't have the power to rotate the engine. If this is true, remove the spark plugs and then try and turn the engine with the starter. If coolant squirts out of one or more of the cylinders it was hydro-locked. You could be looking at bent piston rods and damaged pistons.

Driving the backside of monarch pass and engine overheated. I stopped. Smoke. Boiling coolant. It’s been an hour. Everything has cooled but I think I’m where this post says. Starter trying but it won’t turn. Hoping to check the plugs tomorrow. AAA coming now. I replaced the HG 15k miles ago and it’s been great. 2005 with 206k miles. Damn.
