New TPMS sensors aren't talking to the truck

I recently put on new wheels and tires. Had them mounted and balanced at Big-oooo with new TPMS sensors. I've reset it a couple times to try to get them to calibrate, and I've driven enough miles they should have picked up the info and synced with the truck. I'm not getting any warning lights on the dashboard, so I don't care that much, but does anybody have any ideas about why brand new wheels, tires, and sensors wouldn't talk to my truck?

It's been like 2 months and I just thought to ask

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
They have to be programmed into the truck.

Guy at the shop said they were. I guess they weren't. He asked for year so he could program them correctly.

Now my dilemma is -- Do I care enough to go back, or just continue on with my life since there's no lights on the dash

Honestly I would get them programmed. They were enacted for a reason, to keep people from driving around on low or flat tires. Since you just got new wheels and tires, I would think you would want to protect that investment.

Do they have to dismount the tires to re-program them or is it something the tire shop can do with the wheels/tires on my truck?

You may be surprised at how few tire shop employees actually know how to program new TPMS sensors into the ECU. Many are happy if they don't get an error light.

If they were programmed right, the pressures should show in your display after a quarter mile or so.

No, they plug into the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) port & if they know what they're doing, it's done in a few minutes.

Aftermarket sensors have to be dual band sensors for the pressures to show in the dash.

Most shops sell single band which only clears the TPMS light.

You basically need OEM or dual band sensors. Or live with the lack of reading.

They are programmed and are correct, just not specific enough for tacoma.

I'll add, go to the gas station, let out about 10 PSI or so. If the TPMS light goes on, fill it back up & you're good to go.

Did you ever get this resolved?

I just had four new TPMS installed with a set of new tires and it takes forever to register the data to the screen in the truck. It's been pretty warm here in Clarksville (TN) recently and it takes a good 20 minutes before any number show up on the screen while I am driving.

It did that before I had the new ones installed, but I figured it was because they were getting to that time to replace anyhow (they went bonkers on me in the winter and gave false readings).

Anyhow...just wondering if you got it addressed and what the resolution was.

Mine stopped working after new wheels were installed and wouldn't communicate despite plugging into the ODB. I just got used to not having readouts in the dash screen and would check the tires manually like the olden days. Never had any dash warning lights.

Oddly enough, after I upgraded my stock stereo to the Sony XAV-9500ES, I was able to see my tire pressure readouts again. Puzzled by this witchcraft but happy to have digital TPMS readings once again.

Toyota uses a dual band sensor. 1 frequency band is used to communicate low tire pressure (required by law) and the other is for the actual tire pressure (nice to have).

The truck has likely been programmed with the 4 serial numbers, but it doesn't know which tire is which. If you were to plug in your truck into Techstream, you would likely find it's stuck in "judging" status. Techstream will allow you to manually set which tire is on which corner, but as soon as you press the button under the dash, you be stuck in judging again.

I don't know the fix other than to buy compatible sensors.

Sounds like O sold you the wrong sensors

Let them fix it, on their dime.

If you decided to sell in the next few yrs, a buyer will expect the readout to work.

Haven't gotten it fixed yet lol. I drive that truck like 300 miles a month maybe, and haven't made it back out to talk to them
