Anyone on 2016+ 4 cylinder re-geared with 5.29? Does speed limiter top out at 80 mph? Will 5.29 put auto in weird rpm range so it might actually end up gear hunting between 5/6?

I'm 400lb over stock on 265 right now with roof rack, can't complain, drives fine, but i'm in 3rd up the hills at 70mpg screaming 4000 rpm :)

Have 34x10.5x17 tires coming in and wanted to regear add lockers will be about 700lb over stock when armor installed.

Did you ever choose a ratio?

Im on stock 4.30, 2.7 AT 2022, its a pig and Ive got it locked in 5th on the highway with 265/75-16s. Thinking 4.88 in my case to be able to use all the gears.

Have not regeared yet, went on a 3000 miles trip, nevada at 80mp was 13 mpg, wyoming, montana, idaho with it's 55mph speed limits was ~23 mpg lol. Wish I could test drive 2.7L regeared to 5.29.

Welp, they are in.... first is a bit quicker, 2/3/4 still sluggish, 5/6 are in the realm of normal now. Now it feels like a 4 cyl truck, instead of its former confused self. 4.88 woulda been a waste of time. 6th gear, converter locked is viable at 60 MPH. 67 is 2200 RPMish. Maybe less. Right where I wanted to be.

Its not the huge change my previous 2.7 5 speed had, nor the revelation it was in a few DOHC 4.6 Mustangs going from 3.55 to 4.30/4.56. Its simply normal now.

BF Goodrich A/Ts. According to Discount Tire they were 53 pounds each. My first choice was 235/85-16 but they had no idea if/when they would be back in stock. Those were supposed to be #50.

Forgot to mention I used my buddies GPS to confirm speed,,, speedo is dead on up to 70 MPH at least. I though I read here somewhere the 22 speedos are radar driven? I had expected a 3-5 MPH error but its perfect.

Do you max out at ~80mph with 5.29s on 265/75/16?

Im driving around with an 18' surf ski on my roof.... hahaha. Plus breaking the gears in easy for a bit. I never do +70 anyway. More of a 65 guy. No hurries here.

You will hit the limiter @83mph unless you're able to "tune" the 4cyl in order to reset the global speed limiter. The reason for this is a bit strange in that the speedo sensor is on the ABS unit but the limiter gets its speed from a sensor on the output shaft which on 5.29's is going way faster than stock.

Edit: the actual top limit may be different since the 4cyl comes with 4.3 gears and so the effect wouldn't be as extreme as coming from the 3.73 or whatever the 6cyl auto has stock

Would be great to find out if we limited at 83 i can definitely live with 90 speed limiter haha, road trips through Nevada are all 80mp speed limit.

14 reg cab, went from stock to 4.10, with + tires it wasn't far enough. That was a good ratio for the stock little tires, ended up at 4.88. 23 MPG, 235/85-16" tires. I recall it having more POP than this one with the slush box, but after a few more miles driving it, Im convinced it was worth the cost. Its at least "normal" now. If I ever try the 245/75-16 again I will report back. I cant imagine the gearing is too short even with those on it. This double OD tranny is ridiculous.

Cool, thanks. I wish the 3rd gen 5 speed came stock with 4.30 or 4.56. Would be about right. Wouldn't do 4.88 unless I, like you, had an overdrive to spare.

It doesnt seem to suffer from a speed limiter, I shut her down at 90 MPH just to check up to/beyond 83 MPH.

How has the gears been treating you? I ended up forgetting about it and at 70k miles on a truck now, been living ok by just pressing pedal harder hah.

They were well worth the cost, night and day improvement. I added a OTT tune on the spicy side, with a hotter tune in the ETC button and its now a joy to drive. I will sometimes pop it in 5th to keep the RPMs at 2k as opposed to like 1600 on local highways. Honestly I could just leave it, it lugs along fine regardless. Thankful I didnt go 4.88, 5.29 and my BF all terrain 265/75-15 tires are spot on. Next set will be KO3 ATs in 235/85-16 just to drop a few pounds off each wheel but thats still tens of thousands of miles in the future.

Nice, thank you for response. I'm going to do it. I haven't been suffering at all with C rated 265/70/17, just at 6000+ ft elevations it's a problem to merge on freeway but it's more engine than wheels issue, at sea level it's perfectly fine stock.

Factory SR steelies on 2.7 are 30lb + KO2 265/75/16 50lb combo is 80lb per corner, if you go KO2 265/70/17 (45lb) with 17" alloy trd rims (25lb) you will save 10lb per corner.
