Growing up in the 70s and well into my 40s, I always thought SR5 were for 5 speed standard(manual) because dad had a 1976 Toyota Corolla SR5 Liftback identical to this one and it was 5 speed. upload_2024-6-20_22-55-20.jpg

    @originalohio and @ccw20033 , I think you’re the only 2 in this forum. A few questions:

When it started happening, was the shifter going down as much as normal and the gear didn’t engage or did it stop going as far down as before? If the latter, wondering of something loose is blocking the movement. If the former, I got nothing.

That is what it used to stand for, however the SR5 Tacoma has not had a MT option since 2015.

No. That is partly why it is thought that the issue might be related to the new shift housing. 3rd gens don't have a shift housing, the shift tower sits right on top of the transmission.

How did they not catch this issue in the press tester vehicles?

I thought they were saying there were 3 MTs in the same shop with the 2nd 4th 6th issue. But if you go to the source of the clip he shows at the beginning they clarify in the comments that they have only had one in their shop with the problem (and he says it is 1 of 3 known cases of all the manuals sold - not sure if that is Toyota telling him or another source of info). And they haven't torn down the trans to see what the problem is because Toyota is taking it away to investigate. I hadn't heard of any auto trans problems before this, but can't say I've been looking.

    1. Manufacturers are keen to screen so they only invite sycophants or people are very eager to please on these junkets. For instance, of all the places to do a press launch with a vehicle, what a place to pick like Hawaii, off road capital of the northern hemisphere. How likely are you to bite the hand that feeds you when you get a trip from Gary, IN to Hawaii to make a YT video on the new Tacoma? You're just glad to fly to a place that doesn't smell like rust and narcan.

    2. Shower them with trips, booze, food, access, whatever in the name of getting "content."

    3. Never invite back anyone who doesn't tow the line.

    4. When you drive a press truck on a curated track, with a chaperone, the manufacturer helps minimize the chance that anyone will push the truck in a way that a. damages their products and b. exposes its flaws.

The real press truck heroes are the randos who make like 3 youtube videos a year about their son's t-ball, but then drop some bomb about their Tacoma with 3500 miles that just shit all it's fluids out on the interstate.

Big businesses hire reputation management companies and have pretty fancy social media trawling apps that constantly monitor for complaints. They use AI to analyze them, find positives, complaints, find ways to improve sales and reduce complaints. It helps when people who aren't kissing ass make these videos and posts about things that went wrong or went right, even it it's just a data point in a big spreadsheet.

Manuals failing, and automatics now? What on earth are they doing over at Toyota right now.

This is unheard of even for Dodge Chrysler... but Toyota? Unbelievable.

Toyota is worse than Ford or GM, might as well just buy a new F150 or Silverado.

Amazing. Nothing you said is accurate. FWIW, I was on that Hawai'i trip and about a hundred others throughout the years. Sorry pal, my integrity is worth a LOT more than a hotel room and a beach view.

The truth behind why you don't hear a TON of complaining isn't about being bought. Still laughable. The truth is you are getting a first look at the vehicle. Literally, a FIRST look and a first chat with engineering, marketing, etc... You have zero time to go in-depth and only have about 2 hours with the vehicle max. Now you tell me, when I bring a new vehicle to your driveway for 2 hours and bombard you with information and one-on-one discussions taking up 75% of the time you have with it, how critical do you think you can be?

BTW, I did have a few negative things to say about it. (GASP!) Looks like I won't be invited back. Oh wait. I was invited to other events. I guess that blows your theory out of the water.

Why have the event in Hawai'i? A few reasons: 1. Tacoma is the best-selling vehicle in the state of Hawai'i. 2. The higher-ups at Toyota wanted to go to Hawai'i. You think journalists care? We do not. We are on the road enough and want an easy to get to location. I know a few people who turned down the trip because of it being in Hawai'i and hard to get too.

Journalists don't get to decide where we go or where we stay. I've been advocating for hotels with less fancy hotels and I've been losing. Why? Marketing wants a location where the vehicle sales well or represents the lifestyle their owners use them in. And the higher-ups want a nice location.

And yes, I realize this won't change your mind one bit. Just thought you'd want to hear some actual facts instead of the stuff you wrote.

Ask me next about how many checks I cash since I'm probably bought and paid for. Love that one.

Well you did a good job taking care of that. Nice call out on a certain person for going on about them not selling.
