Yes. It’s not uncommon at all.

Yes, they have been found on Tacoma trucks.

Google and THIS forum have many instances of it.

Unauthorized and on a vehicle that was paid for in cash? Good grief. Obviously, it is more common than I thought but it is no longer their property.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
Yeah they don't usually remove them. Many of them are actually put into the gas tank for that very purpose. They just stopped tracking them if you pay the truck off

Installed right after it gets off the car carrier in case it gets stolen off the lot.

I noticed when you want to pay cash, the salespeople get a different attitude.

They love financing, makes them money or they get the vehicle back.

Does that mean you can call them for directions when you get lost?

There are different types, and it all comes down to the dealers own standard operating procedures and the type of business they do.

A franchise dealer may install these devices as a dealer mark-up item. The "benefit" to the customer is tracking made available to law enforcement in the event that the vehicle is reported stolen.

I know this because we were a franchise dealer and offered this for vehicles not equipped with such a factory setup.

Other vehicles that were gps-enabled from the factory, would be tracked by the customer via subscription (or whatever the terms were for said manufacturer).

As a dealer, we did have a vehicle stolen and we simply reached out to said service to enable tracking for recovery purposes (provided to law enforcement).

On the otherhand, a subprime lender did want to get a dealer agreement with us that would practically finance "almost anyone". The stipulation was that a vehicle would require one of their own tracking devices to be installed.

This was simply for the benefit of the financial institution in the event that the customer defaulted on their loan.

And lastly, the same tracking device used by that subprime lender is often used by used car lots that specialize in BUY HERE PAY HERE.

If you're purchasing a vehicle from such a lot, sorry but you should reconsider your options and get your finances in order. But that's usually the only time you'll see such a tracking device used by a dealership.
