So I would have to purchase proprietary equipment to load the tune vs using an off the shelf tuner to upload the tune to the vehicle? It seems this is the way with the Tacoma. Seems like a step backwards compared to what is being done on other vehicle brands.

it’s not necessarily proprietary, in fact it’s the opposite of what you claimed earlier which is actually proprietary:

It's not proprietary.. We offer it in a bundle to again, make it convenient so you don't have to purchase hardware/software from somewhere else, then buy a tune.

    We're actually here to help.

Wont need a smog check until Aug ‘25 and am hoping to see how my KDMAX tune shakes out over the next 17 months with other people’s smog horror stories. I love my tune, is the OTT similar? I’d pay for a new flash if it came with a CARB compliant sticker.

We expect our CARB-EO to be approved for the 3G 3.5L Tacoma any day now. It's not a easy/quick process and the timeline isn't within our control so it's a waiting game for us just like it is for you guys.

But if the worst was to happen I could still pay OTT for a “new” tune and pass my Kaliforia smog check? :fingerscrossed::spending::benchpress:

I appreciate it. If I own VFTuner can I download my stock tune before uploading the tune I purchase from you?

VFT provides you the stock files. So you can flash back to stock at anytime.

Another Colorado 3rd Gen owner due for emissions on my 2017. I own VFT and have the stock file and software. Will flashing back to stock solve the CVN issue for ODB emissions tests?

Let us know how that turns out for you. I always use the roadside rapid screen - have to have two tests done a minimum of three months before registration tag expires - your renewal notice will indicate if you passed or not. Sounds like that option did not work for you or you did not take advantage of it. GL.

Roadside would def be the way to do it. Moved here in 2016 and bought the truck in 2017. This is the first time I’ve been due to test for renewal. Looked up the roadside stipulations too late for this renewal, but will do next time.

It sounds like as long as you use the latest files, you should be good and your CVN should show stock.

Has there been an issue in CA? I only heard about one in CO.

Does flashing back to stock with the VF tune software not work?

It didn’t work before as the older file did not return the CVN back to stock.

Now the most updated files are do work and will return the CVN to stock.

I don’t believe anyone in CA has reported an issue.

Can confirm. Got the latest stock file from VF Tuner Support last week, flashed, and got emissions tested today in Denver. Truck passed. CVN read fine.
