I've been driving for over 50 years and have owned more manuals than automatics. But with most modern truck engines a manual is a poor choice. My 1960's-1980's trucks had engines that produced their torque at well under 3000 rpm. Closer to 2000 rpm's in some cases. That combined with lower axle ratio's and lower gearing in 1st and reverse made a manual a good fit in those trucks/SUV's.

Most modern engines need more engine speed to get power. Most of them are in the 3000-3500 fps range and the 3rd gen Tacoma's needed 4600 rpm. Combined with the axles and transmission gearing you have no power until you get some engine speed up. The engines are designed for fuel economy and to work with an automatic. The torque converter in an automatic makes a huge difference.

I've not seen any specs on where the 4th gen Tacoma gets torque, but if it's like most of the other turbo charged engines it should need a lot less rpm to get power. If so, this should help the 4th gen trucks work better with a manual.

I’ve owned 2 manual Tacos. And test drove the auto and 6 speed manual version of this new Taco. It definitely matches up better with the 8 speed auto, which is what I bought.

I have a funny feeling they took the 6 speed manual right out of the 3rd gen Taco, and thats not good thing. It revs @ 2100 RPM at 65 MPH. While the automatic is at about 1600-1700 RPMs. Hence why same truck gets 20 MPG highway with the manual and 23 with the auto (3rd gen).

This new one is literally perfect with the 8 speed auto.

We heard it here first.. 4th gen is the best gen. Great looking truck and 285s are a must on 4th gen.

    First, nice truck.

    Second, I-O!

Third, what's the payload sticker on your truck door jamb say and do you have a real spare?

    Thanks.

I tell ya. I couldn’t be happier with the truck and the tires. Nice thing too is I don’t have to go blow $1100 on TRD wheels. Honestly I love the OEM rims especially with the 285s…

    Go Bucks! Lol….

I tell ya what. I’ll check it…I’m honestly not sure….and yes it’s a real spare. But I do think they’re slightly smaller? It’s definitely not a 285. lol

I’ve had 3 of these trucks. The v6 6 speed is functional and reliable, but so NOT enjoyable to drive. I want to go drive one, but also don’t because I know I’ll probably buy it, and I want to wait at least a year. I won’t miss the v6. I’m not sure why everyone is butt hurt about it.

Yea I wouldn't test drive one, you would probably come home with it. I've had the 4.0 and 3.5 V6 models, manual and automatic and I can say for certain the new turbo 4 blows both out of the water. Reliability is yet to be determined though.

I’m pretty sure I heard AMD (car care nut) say the 2.4 is very similar to the A25 in the Camry, which has been extremely reliable. I have a 19 Camry and it’s been flawless. See also

Ironically we have a '23 Camry as well. Although I don't think the 2.4T in the Tacoma shares much at all with the A25. Now, the 2.4T in the Highlander, yes, some similarities.

Now, I just wish I could get the 40mpg in the Tacoma that I can get in the Camry

Did you get a full size spare as well?

Curious if they’ll fit in the spare storage.

    No, I didn’t…I’m guessing there’s no way a 285 would fit…
