Hey, when I drained my front differential fluid, it was a dark green color. I had to weld nut to get the drain plug off. so when I noticed that it leaked, I drained and filled again about two weeks later and put a new plug on. And again it had quite a bit of a green tint to it. Is this normal? I used Valvoline Gear oil

So when you changed yours was the fluid green? That’s what I am trying to figure out. How would I have gotten moisture in there?

Define green? My front diff had water in it a few years back when I did the 90k service. Its a very unique look, not what I would call green

Mine was an olive green when I changed it after I bought the truck. This was six months ago, so I have no pictures.

Do you drive the truck before dumping the oil? Gear oil mixed with water or moisture looks like my pic. Im not sure what happens if it sits for a while, maybe it separates?

If it is in fact water, check your breather line. Thats where my issue was. Theres really not many areas where water can get in without leaking oil out

This is what some call 'Moose Milk'. I first learned about it when changing the lower unit gear oil on a Volvo Penta outdrive. (The term is also used for some kind of Canadian Drink). Worn prop shaft seal allowed water in lower unit. And speaking of boats and green diff lube, Mercury Marine markets a brand of diff fluid for outdrives that is green or bluish in color. And chance someone used this in @Josephray70 front diff?

That may be a possibility. I wish I knew the color of the rear differential fluid when it was changed. But I had that flushed at the dealership when I bought the truck. I did do the transfer case and that was not green. It was normal color.

No, I wish I did. I did this after I bought the truck six months ago. Had 94,000 miles on it so I decided to do the hundred thousand mile maintenance that was required. Just picture a bowl of pea soup.

Yeah, I've seen this. Some heavy lubes can have somewhat of a greenish tint to them.

I want to find out the cause before just changing the fluid. That involves going to a Toyota dealership and getting crush washers for the drain and fill plugs again, because no part stores have them. I hate these crush washers. Haven’t found one on my wife’s jeep cherokee yet.

Yeah, that’s definitely A lot cheaper than the dealership. But I tried to order them from Amazon before and they sent me the wrong ones! But I think that was for the transmission pan drain and fill plugs. But I’m not sure that was a while ago. so do you guys think it’s necessary for me to change this fluid out? Buck Henry suggested that someone may have put green fluid in there.

I ordered 2 sets and got both right. One for the initial early change and one for further down the road. Maybe I am just lucky but Amazon has never sent me the wrong thing on any of my orders.

Even use the generic engine drain plus washers they have. At less than a $1 each

Now, the only thing that may be different is you have a 2017. That kit fits the 2nd gen like my 2015. Maybe someone else with a 3rd gen can chime in and confirm they use the same washers

Well, my truck is saved in Amazon. So anything I order I just click on it to make sure the parts fit. If they don’t, Amazon will suggest parts that do.

But I still have not found sufficient evidence that I need to change my fluid. I just changed it six months ago. I am due to check the level of my differential fluids which I will do At 105 K. So far everything is pointing to somebody, put a heavier greenish gear oil in there. I still have to research that of what type they might of use I will After work
