They confirmed the truck was in 4LO, and the rear diff was locked. So we can put that to bed, finally.

The rest of the video sounds like PR.

    Yep, I do.

I found it interesting they flew two engineers in to examine the front end.

Don't know of any other manufacturer that will publicly address how they build their trucks, what goes into them, and what their problems have been. For example, a high profile youtuber has gingerly hinted Ford doesn't like being criticized. Don't ask me for sauce, cause I ain't digging it up again. If Sheldon says n=1. I believe it. If he says patch already applied in production line, I will believe it. No one else comes forward like this. Sure, part of it is PR. But if he is lying it is too easy to out otherwise.

pretty sure some years ago TFL said outright that ford “blacklisted” them for criticizing some of their vehicles, and wouldn’t let them do the pre release testing they do now

He says one broken ADD. If there'd been a second one, it would have gone viral, just like this one did.

Auto manufacturers aren’t always completely truthful, but at least they have to answer to all sorts of regulatory agencies. They’ve been known to mislead people, but there can be consequences when they do.

I damn sure believe them over any YouTuber, influencer, yelp reviewer, message board poster or any other online hack who can post whatever they want, in whatever misleading fashion they desire, with no repercussions whatsoever

Got them a lot of views quickly, it just goes to show what people want to see.

Cybertruck fail videos are quite popular as well.

Very much so. Since these rambling YouTube videos suck the life out of me, this is about the best use case for AI I've found -- summarize this 24 minute blather into something I can digest in 10 seconds without 40 ads for soap and random politicians:

NoteGPT - YouTube Video Summarizer with AI

    • Confirmation that the incident was a one-time occurrence with minimal impact on other vehicles.
    • Insights into the software update for TRD Pro and non-hybrid models to prevent similar incidents.
    • Discussion on the various modes of the truck and their algorithms for torque and power distribution.
    • Emphasis on the importance of mechanical sympathy and responsible driving to prevent vehicle damage.
The root cause of the Tacoma’s failure was a rare scenario where the traction control logic exceeded the overall driveline system strength, leading to the front differential snapping. Toyota is working on a software update to prevent this from happening again.

Vague? The engineer cited the exact amount of torque that caused the failure and how Toyota will prevent it.

I don't want to make a new post.
But I'm more intrigued with the video below.

    5-1 shift grenades the clutch.
But Toyota says it was the input shaft that was damged.

I'd like to know what failed. The disk or the input shaft.

Anyways, It's not a quality issue. It's was a user error.
To be honest, I have no idea why anyone would attempt a drastic down shift with out manually rev matching.

I'll second this response and up it... I believe him and respect his demonstrated willingness to take responsibility to define and respond to the issues.

So was the truck engineered to be just strong enough in stock form? He said the intermediate shaft that broke is a "fuse" and it would certainly suck to break that over a CV when you are on the side of the trail in the middle of nowhere.

I guess we’ll see. I would imagine a lot of rock crawling is going to happen this summer. If we don’t see a shit ton of broken trucks, then I would say it’s just a rare event.

If on the other hand a bunch of trucks break in the passes of the Rockies and elsewhere, then Toyota will have to address the design.
