My tailgate bushing broke so I got new ones from Amazon. The brand is RLB-HILON and it comes with two. I installed one and the tailgate still falls open. I thought it might be defective so I tried the second one with the same result. This makes me think that something else is wrong.

Here's a photo of mine with the new one installed. You can see that there's not a lot of overlap between the bushing and the round metal part around it, like maybe my tailgate is pushed over to the left too far or the tailgate opening is too wide. It also looks like the lower part of the round part that the bushing rubs against looks like it may be bent down.

Can y'all post pics of yours for comparison?

Likely what's wrong is 'Amazon knock off parts'.

I think @christian06 might have both a bushing and a security solution you might want to look at.

Otherwise, and OE bushing from a Toyota dealer, or *maybe* even Rock Auto, would be a better bet than Amazon.

It looks like the bushing on the other side might be gone because it should be tighter than that.
Also, the bushing doesn't stop it from flopping open, it's the dampener that let's it down slowly.
Since your gate is far to the left, it might not be engaging the dampener.

Online information is confusing. Almost everyone is using "damper / dampener" to describe the part on the passenger side that I replaced, and lots of them are saying that's the part that causes the tailgate to open slowly. I did find this. Is this the part I actually need to get?
@Clearwater Bill implied that you sell parts. If so, is this one of them?

Amazon knockoff exploded when I dropped the tailgate for the first time (same demise as my OEM one). Amazon one was just to hold me over until the OEM one showed up, apparently nobody in town had one so I had to order it online. The OEM one went in and fit great, been about a month and the OEM one is still working great. The amazon ones aren't a proper replacement

There only $6 for an OEM one at the dealership, just saying.
