It's not Friday, but I traded her in for a full size domestic... Tundra

Today I traded my lovely Barcelona Red 2022 Third Gen TRD Off Road in for a ... 2021 SR5 Tundra. The Tundra is made in the USA, so I figure calling it a domestic makes some sort of sense.

Anyway, for posterity and if you're interested, here are my parting thoughts as I move on from the Tacoma platform.

    Pros:
    • I loved my Tacoma. These truck have their shortcomings, but overall they are fantastic. I had more fun driving my truck than any other vehicle I have ever owned
    • Capability. I bought my Tacoma to be a daily driver, a Home Depot pot getter, and a weekend warrior offroader. It did not disappoint on any of those objectives! I had some Jeep friends take me on some fairly challenging trails (though probably easy for many of you) and the Tacoma made it fine. It was far more capable than its driver! What a fun and capable platform.
    • Red. I have never had a colorful car before and I will miss driving something red. (But I won't miss how hot darker colors get in the heat...)

Cons - It's hard to list cons for the Tacoma since most of its shortcomings are really just aspects of being a smaller vehicle, but here are a few

    • High revving engine paired with a gear shifty transmission. This was particularly annoying in the mountains where I live
    • Criminally low payload. One thousand pounds is pretty bad. My new truck has pretty low payload too so it must be a Toyota thing...

So if I liked my Tacoma so much, why did I change trucks? Well, my needs and wants changed. I will be towing a lot more often and I needed something that could do 6,000lbs+ without too much trouble. My family is also growing. While we have a family hauler, the space of the Tundra will be very useful.

    Other thoughts
    • Tacomaworld is a great community. There are so many knowledgeable people here from whom I learned a lot, even if they don't know it.
    • Toyota DCM is annoying. I will be changing the head unit in my Tundra so I can get rid of it permanently.
    • Try to be nice to the 4th Gen guys.

Thanks for all the fun guys. I hope you don't mind if I stick around the Tundras sub forum.

    Dr. Ransom, over and out.

    One last look...

not really a toyota thing, it's the revised SAE towing standards that were enacted in the early 2000's. and the insurance companies.

Congratulations. I went from a 2007 tundra crewmax with the 5.7 to my 2023 tacoma. The tacoma is nothing like the tundra, but I no longer needed the big interior space, and wanted a manual transmission again. I liked the tundra much better than my taco, good luck.

Congrats on the new truck and expanding family!
This is was a wise move! I love the Tacoma, but family hauler and tow vehicle it is not.

Nice new ride. Seen you joined up on Tundras.com today and was going to recommend that.

Check out some threads on better fuel economy and alignment specs. My tundra did pretty good in the fuel mileage after adjusting the toe a bit.
