    Hi all,

This is in regard to a 2014 Prerunner 4.0 (2WD) with a towing package.

I’m planning on doing a motor swap, what components need to get switched out to prevent oil contamination or generally what would be a good idea to replace? Truck is at 84k miles. Bought a truck that had hidden engine damage.

does the towing package add an engine oil cooler ? I’m trying to get a sense of what everything will entail.

ALSO, if anyone knows of a good shop in Northern California / Bay Area that could do an engine swap please let me know.

    Thanks for your input!

Welcome to Tacoma World. You may have better luck posting in your regional section regarding local shops. https://www.tacomaworld.com/forums/northern-california.42/

Yes the model with towing package came with the oil cooler, it mounts where the oil filter sits. You shouldn't need to replace that, can probably be cleaned out sufficiently and re-used.

If your bad engine had contamination like metal in the oil, then just replacing the engine will probably do it. Oiling system on the 4.0 is pretty much all internal. If we are talking contamination of the coolant as well, then plan on a new radiator and maybe heater core too. This is just off the top of my head, will let others chime in if they have more details.

    Good luck!

Thanks! I’ll go an ask around to see if someone may know of one!

Right know it’s looking like it was only oil contamination but I may elect to replace the radiator and heater core to be safe.

how scrupulous should I be with removing previous coolant from the lines? No bad head gasket but I did see a speck of something like dust/dirt when I opened the radiator cap. Might’ve fallen in at that moment.

Only way to know about the coolant is to drain it and see what it looks like. But generally if you don't already know of a problem with the coolant/head gasket, then you'll probably be okay.
