Anyone ever see anything like this? I know the white has a paint peeling problem, but I have a massive amount of chipping all over the truck after 5500 miles driven on paved roads. Almost seems like someone forgot to add hardener to the paint.

First picture is the leading edge of one of the rear bumpers.
    20240630_160808.jpg
Second pic is the rear driver door jamb - also notice the primer almost seems visible, aside from the chips.

    20240630_160757.jpg

Grand finale, the final two pics are behind are behind the front tires on the rocker panels.

There are other chips I have found as well.

    2023? ... 5500 miles?... totally unacceptable.

My 2021 with 20k has zero issues like this and I've been down gravel roads several times.

Curious if you have OE wheels/tires and mud flaps in place.

Yeah the first thing I saw was the door jamb and was trying to rationalize hitting a bad rock or something. Just saw the rocker panels and honestly my mind is blown right now. Those puppies are gonna rust out next winter.

    What does your dealer say?

Focus on the 'see the primer' not the road rash

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
That is bad and no way normal. For reference, my 2016 TRD OR has 78K miles on it. About 20K miles offroad on bad washboard, pothole and gravel roads.

No mudflaps on for the last 60 or so off road trips. Too much dragging through washouts.

My paint is still like new, no chips anywhere from rocks. They obviously did not skimp on the paint on the early 2016s.

Yeah something must have gone wrong at the factory. The paint is so soft, that when I applied light pressure in the rocker panel area with my thumbnail, it left a small indentation.

I'm going to call the dealer to make an appointment tomorrow.

Its common with white paint. Have you tried searching the forums for other similar issues?

Don't buy a toyota with white paint anymore, it's really that simple. I have a 2013 rav4, white paint peeled 3 months after the extended 10 year warranty. Waiting on a resolution. Toyota and white paint is a losing combination.

I have, this seems substantially different than peeling paint. Over 1000 chips in 5500 miles. Haven't seen anything that severe in my searches.

I have -12 offset wheels, all terrain tires and no mud flaps and my white 18k mile 23 doesn't have any chips like that.

My truck (2017 SuperWhite w/ 133k miles) has a significant number of chips as well but also has terrible peeling. Those chips are insane.

My 2015 super white has the odd paint chip as you would expect after 10 years but nothing like that. Still have original mud flaps and the tube steps and their mounting brackets have done a good job catching any rocks the front mud flaps didnt. And no peeling anywhere.

Except for a mile or so of cottage (gravel) road on occasion its been all paved roads.
    Just passed 60K miles.

I never thought about it when I bought them but the tube steps have had a unexpected but great benefit. Since they stick out further than the doors I have NO door dings as well since anyone that opens their car door would hit those first

Yeah, this failure seems different, or extreme, compared to the paint peeling. I am basically averaging a chip per 1-5 miles driven. Seems like the peeling issue takes a few years to materialize and is not preceded by chipping.

I’ve got a 2022 white taco, 23,000 miles and no signs of chipping or peeling yet. It’s not the color but Toyota’s poor white paint or the application process. My 22 y/o white Yukon has no paint issues, my 33 y/o white Isuzu truck has no paint issues. I hate to hear about Toyota’s white paint issue, ugh !!! I did have the Modesta coating put on the exterior paint, maybe that saved it for now. Time will tell is guess.

Have you loaned your truck to anyone recently? You say paved roads that appears as though someone has been driving on gravel roads or off roading. I think you will have a hard time convincing the dealer that is paint failure.

Even if the paint is soft as you say some kind of projectile has to be hitting the paint surface to chip the paint. If it was paint failure it would most likely be everywhere not just in the areas that objects from the road would be hitting the paint in lieu of bumper, rocker and door jamb.

The service manager is on vacation so he won't be able to look at it for a couple weeks.

I am too old for internet arguments and posted to see if anyone else has experienced this type of issue. Obviously something is wrong with the paint and I am not concerned about the dealership pretending it's normal wear and tear in 6mo/5500mi. I'll update when there's a resolution.

If it is a factory paint defect, there will very likely be other vehicles built during the same time period that have the same issue your are having. I hope the dealer is able to figure it out and address it for you.
