OK so I know this is an old thread. My Tacoma is my first Toyota and first time dealing with the canister style filter. I did my first oil change at 4500 Miles. I didn't find it difficult at all. Yes it was different. I had to pay attention to the o ring being in the correct place. My oil drained out of the filter without any really mess with the Plastic thing in the filter box. So I thought I'm good with this. My only complaint was messing with the metal skid plate so I got a TRD knock off plate with an access opening.
Then after letting the dealership do my included oil changes at 10,000 and 20,000 they over tightened the cap and the little filter drain cap too. I got the filter cover off but wasn't able to got the metal drain cap off with out turning the whole filter after the 20,000 mile service they did. So then it made a huge mess with all the oil in the filter on top of my skid plate when I took it off without draining it.
After taking it off the truck I didn't have any way to get all the oil off so I could hold the cap and loosen the drain cover with a rachet so the next time I'd be able to use it.
I'm trying to come up with a way to get it without ruining the Plastic cap.
I think I'm going to get some brake cleaner to clean it after I remove it and a strap wrench to grip it if needed so I can get the filter drain off and put it back on to the correctly, not too snug.

I think the set up is good as long as the parts are reassembled the way they are supposed to.

I'm also now taking care of a wrangler that's joined the household. The wrangler has a canister filter too but it's on too and very nice to deal with. Of course the first time I changed the oil in that the oil drain plug was all rounded off by whoever was doing it before. All the issues I have with doing oil changes seem to be caused by lube techs that over do it.

I'd screw it back on the truck with an oring and get it pretty snug. Then use the shortest extention possible (or no extention) on the small cap and hit the ratchet handle with a hammer to see if the cap will break loose. Also could try a battery impact if you have one. Should definitely be able to break it free. Turning slow or steady will just remove the entire housing. Good luck.

Because I have the skid plate with the little plate opening to access the filter I'd have to use an extension. But that's an idea I will have to try that when I do my oil change in a few weeks. Probably try that before removing the entire housing to change the filter. Then if not go with my other plan with it off the vehicle.

Get the filter housing tight, and use a cordless impact and an extension to get the filter plug loose. it will spin before the filter housing. Good luck, tell us how you do. Ski

Yep it is nuts. Over done by the dealer. I just took the whole thing off last time then it was all oily and I didn't have anything to get that off so I could hold it and break it loose. So I put it back to deal with this time around
