I run an inreach mini 2. the search an rescue insurance is more for those in the mountain and hard to reach areas. more for back packers, thru hikers etc. I dont think it works like CAA for vehicles.

I'll be adding the SAR 100 Plan for when i got backpacking into the mountains in a few weeks

I have an InReach Mini (the original, not version 2) and the basic Garmin SOS plan. Haven't bought SAR 100 insurance so far.

Look carefully into your state/province/jurisdiction's regulations, rules, and informal precedents for who pays for SAR. There are a good number of states who do not charge for SAR in genuine emergencies. (Unless the rescued party is egregiously negligent, e.g. if the are stone drunk & run their 4x4 into a ravine 40 miles from anywhere and that is evident to the SAR people, probably the drunk party is going to pay for the SAR.)

    Separate note:
The InReach Minis have a pretty good reliability record but they are not perfect & can suffer electronics and/or battery failures. If I was going far off track for a long period (say, weeks) I would consider carrying TWO InReach Minis, with separate subscriptions, etc.

two is overkill for one person but if you're off track you are probably going with a buddy, where at that point both should have their own unit.
but agreed, there is a voluntary SAR here in the Yukon but for $60/year it's worth the peace of mind for a trip into the mountains.

    Thanks guys.

It may be useless, but i ordered the sar insurance for 60$.

Now i need to order the same insurance for my buddy. It's per person, not per gps

99.99% of the time it's "useless", or rather un-used. That's why it's so cheap.

That 0.01% of the time it's pretty valuable to have.
