It probably didnt redline because the clutch grenaded before it had a chance to redline. Based on what it sounded like, I'd believe he jammed 1st.

I was bored, so I did a little investigating with the evidence/facts available.

    Screenshot_20240701-123003.png

Screenshot shows 74 km/hr, and this is after Dad ground it (probably fell a bit while he was dicking around).
Here's what the 1st gear synchro was trying to do (Toyota's theory):

    Screenshot_20240701-130519.png

Almost 10k rpm. Oh yeah, clutch should have totally stood up to that

silver lining here is that it's better for the clutch to grenade on a money shift than the engine?

The truck shouldn’t have let them go into first at that speed….wouldn’t the syncros have blocked out first gear at that speed?

I don't think he got it into 1st, for the exact reason you stated (and hence the grinding he got trying to force things). The synchro would have, however, tried to spin up the input shaft to approx 10k rpm (doing its job).

    Good points.

As for the alternate hypothesis: If he was in fact shifting into 3rd when the clutch let go. This video is three months old. There are probably 1,000 or more 2024 MTs in the wild at this point? If a 5 --> 3 shift destroys the clutch I would think the reports would be all over this forum by now.

Automatic here with the 3.5, and I have tried to go from 2nd gear to 1st gear while using the engine braking in sport mode, and sometimes the system will beep and not allow it. Surely as you stated, Toyota must have built in a safety feature for that not to happen.

It’s fast becoming (or lack there of) what manufacturer(s) can one trust with 100% certainty :/)

I've never seen a manual trans that has blocked any forward gears once moving. You may get grinding, or hard time getting it into a lower gear but you're not physically stopped from shifting into the lower gear. Auto is completely different since the computer controls the gear changes.

Edit: I somewhat lied. Now I remember 4th Gen f bodies forced you from first to fourth under light throttle for mpgs.

It is really odd on the 3rd gen... it's hard to get from 2nd to first once moving... you literally feel like you're about to break it. I believe the trans is mostly a carry over.

I can barely understand WTH this kid is saying. Doesn’t even sound like English most of the time- I honestly wonder if he speeds up his videos 1.5x for whatever reason. Dude sounds like he’s got a mouthful of marbles!

Yes!! This came out in my formative years, and I looked up double clutching with my dialup internet. Got pretty good at rev match downshifts with double clutching in my MT Honda accord (yes with a few “mods”), because Vinnie said I should… :tinfoilhat:I’m sure I’m not the only one who had that experience!

I forgot to mention, although I believe he shifted into 3rd, he was looking at the stick shift way too much before shifting. An experienced driver doesn’t have to do that. Body and mind just does without having to look!

I'd like to see someone else attempt to duplicate this with another press truck, going 5th to 3rd.

I've driven a number of manuals over the years, and I never thought it was possible to go from 5th to 1st?! The Civic I last had, it'd only go into 1st when nearly stopped.

Good news everyone! Since I've already rearranged my sock drawer today, I had nothing better to do this afternoon than to recreate this chucklehead's video with my LRT (Luxury Race Truck).

    First, a few comments:
    • He started his Idiot Theatre at 2K rpm in fifth. That's ~55mph because km/h is only for Canadians and other mentally challenged individuals. Side note: I am 100% allowed to make fun of Canadians. I'm married to one.
    • 55mph is right about 4K rpm in third. Perfectly fine for a downshift from fifth.
    • I normally don't have iMT on because I know how to drive a stick but I turned it on for this experiment just to see how it reacted.
Now, the test. Driving along at 2K in fifth I pushed in the clutch, nudged the shifter into third, and it went in just fine. iMT revved the engine to ~3800 rpm and held it there, and when I let the clutch out the revs went up another hundred or so. No fuss, no muss, no drama.

Now go back and watch his video. When he tried to get it into "third" (and all the horrible grinding happened) iMT revved the engine way past 4K. Why so high? Because he wasn't trying to get it into third. iMT was trying to bring the engine up to 5300rpm to get as close to rev-matching first gear as it could. edit - iMT did nothing wrong here. It was just doing it's job. I present the fact that it went above 4K as evidence he was trying to force the transmission into first, not third.

Case closed. You may now resume your regularly scheduled programming. And I have an underwear drawer to go rearrange.
