^Thanks. Yes, you wouldn't get grinding going 5th to 3rd, but yes, 5th to 1st!

But seriously, thanks for taking one for the team, or just getting away from your sock drawer, whichever was your primary motivation.

FYI, quite a few Canada geese are born in the USA.

I’d love to hear who at Toyota programmed a rev match from 5th to 1st and a 11k rpm blip

I don't use the iMT either and don't know its limits/internal workings but would guess when he was grinding it that it had already reached whatever its max. is and said "you're on your own bud". If it had rev matched 1st he might have actually got it all the way in gear? Which may have yielded a much worse result.

They scrap the press cars after they are done with them, right?

No one did, because it didn't and it doesn't.

So I think you are mixing up the two sides of the clutch, as many people in this thread are. iMT has absolutely nothing to do with the success or failure of him getting the transmission into first gear. All of that is happening on the opposite side of the open clutch.

Since both my sock and underwear drawers are now organized, I have plenty of time to pontificate so let's walk through what happened in that catastrophic video, beginning with Chucklehead driving along at 2K in fifth. The clutch is closed so both sides are turning ~2K.

He opens the clutch and engine revs drop to idle but the transmission is still in fifth. At this point the engine side of the clutch is turning ~800 rpm and the trans side of the clutch is still turning ~2K.

He moves the gear shift over and tries to force it into first. Two completely different things are happening on either side of the clutch. On the trans side, the syncros are being forced to try to spin the input shaft (and that side of the clutch) up to ~12K rpm. (!!!) On the engine side, iMT senses that more than redline is required to rev-match, so it does the best it can: it tries to bring the engine (and that side of the clutch) up to 5,300 rpm and hold it there. That's the only choice it has under these horrific circumstances, and I'm willing to bet iMT is petrified at this point because it knows that if Chucklehead does get it into first, and then releases the clutch, iMT and the rest of the engine are going to die a horrible, painful, humiliating death.

But, Chucklehead doesn't get it into first. Somewhere on it's journey from 2K to 12K rpm, the input shaft (and the trans side of the clutch) explodes. Chucky releases pressure on the gear shift lever, iMT breathes a sigh of relief, and engine revs (and the engine side of the clutch) fall back to idle. Then our illustrious videographers coast to the side of the road and say "OMG TOYOTA BLEW UP! TOYOTA BAD!"

It sounds like the iMT system tried to match the rpm that it would be at in 1st gear at 55mph and cooked it’s self.

I am not sure about the trans in the 4th gen, but in my 2nd gen there is no way I could accidentally go to 1st from 5th without absolutely muscling it in as there is a lockout that either knows rpm or wheel speed. The trans can only get into first under 5mph, and trust me I have accidentally tried to go to 1st from higher gears many times and it saved my butt. I would be surprised a newer trans wouldn't have this but the software controlling it might be the issue. As a LONG time manual Tacoma driver, I also don't think he ever got to first as the rpm didn't get nearly high enough, AND the wheels would have locked/ chirped as the engine braking from the speed differential would be massive.

There's no lockout that stops you from doing it. The synrcos can't match the speed and that makes it difficult to get into the lower gear. The entire point of a manual trans is that you have control over it; not the computer.

Read justanothersquids post. He explains it well.

I don't think there is a ''you can't fix stupid'' software upgrade.

If there was, the inventor would make Gates look like a pauper.

So question for you: Do USA-born Canada Geese fly in km/h or mph? I'm betting they fly in mph.

It's been over a decade since I drove a manual, but I am pretty sure all the MT's I drove didn't allow you to go into 1st if you weren't going slow enough. But then again I never tried 1st going 55mph.
