So I finally picked up my new $12 Knob from Toyota. I took it to one of my friends to see how we could "Make it Better". I said lets use a piece of shrink tube, but he had a better idea. We took a very small metal hose clamp, (the spring steel kind, Without the screw to tighten it) Ground off the ears and used that to reinforce the exterior of the plastic. I took some doing to get it on we had to stretch it a lot to not have to force the knob on but it seems to be a good reinforced fit.

All that additional bracing + the clip on the LC knob just shows where the corners are continuing to be cut on new vehicles. Sad. Honestly not sure what I’ll do when it comes time to replace my 4Runner.

I don't think people buy Toyotas to have the radio knobs falling off in a month or two of purchase. In fact, i'm pretty sure this is the type of shit we use to slander buyers of "lesser" brands as examples of poor craftsmanship and quality.

Fuck bootstrapping a solution to a problem you shouldn't have to deal with. Period. Toyota can't make a radio knob worth a damn, should we really be surprised their engine bearings are also junk? What else am I gonna have to Gorilla glue back on my 50-60k piece of junk?

No, complain about it and hope Toyota hears enough feedback to fix it, just like the thin ass plastic used in the blower hub that lead to a service campaign due to cracking and breaking. If owners simply glued it back together, it never would have gotten addressed.

My wife had a Chevy Sonic when I met her. We’ve kept it as our third car but man I’d laugh at the stupid little things that car has had to wrong with it. It’s 100% the truth, I laugh at the fact that GM couldn’t design a sleeve on the door lock (a part that only the door lock touches) to successfully stay secured and not pop off when the doors are unlocked, or that they couldn’t design an intake boot that didn’t disintegrate, or that they couldn’t design a shifter that didn’t get caught on its own plastic and impede operation. I’m also convinced that whoever designed the sun visors in that vehicle forgot what a sun visor is meant to do. They’re easily the most useless sun visors I’ve ever seen.

All that to say, when I’ve driven that, and yet back into my 4Runner, I truly appreciate the thought that went into it and the sheer durability of it compared to the Sonic. Granted two totally different price points. Or when I think of my FILs 06 Corolla with 320k on it and it hasn’t had the same dumb issues the sonic had, it makes me laugh. Hell I’m not trusting the Sonic to get me to and from a work trip I’ve got coming up because I think the transmission is on it’s way out at 133k. Now it sounds like that’s the kinda stuff to worry about on a Toyota. Dumb trim prices falling off, engines blowing, transmissions failing, poorly designed parts.

Toyota needs to step their game up on their modern vehicles. I’ve gone to lengths to say avoid any Toyota that’s been redesigned after the 2020+ model year (with few exceptions). That seems to be where the biggest dip in quality has happened. Look at the highlanders, they cheaped out on the clips to hold the front bumper on so they’re literally falling off while driving.

Man am I glad I bought a clean 2nd gen. I agree with the sentiment about a 50k vehicle should not be doing this. That's why I bought a 23 gx460 for my wife and not a 24. I knew we won't have problems with the 23 gx because it's still the old toyota recipe.

Yep, thats one of the reasons I picked a 24 SR5 4runner 4WD for 41.5k in the tried and true package. I can possibly see a new Tacoma in my future, but I’ll wait until the bugs get worked out. Reading these forums are pure entertainment.

Glad to finally see someone else say this. I go hunting out in the boonies of SE and E Oregon. They call it the “Oregon Outback” for a reason haha.

I usually have to bring a few Jerry cans when towing due to the fact there aren’t many gas stations out there once you get past a certain point. Hell I bring a few even when I’m not towing
