Replaced VVT on driver's side of the engine last Sunday morning. Replaced with with an OEM part from Toyato out of Ks. The cost of the part was $172 which included shipping. Today is Friday, and so 5 days later the code reappears. Truck runs fine. Post a message on Tacoma eariler today and a subscriber told me that I should have replaced the VVT filter at the same time. I just did not know that. So today, I order a new filter and gasket.
Part Number Part Name Price Quantity Total
    15678-31010 Filter, Oil Control Valve $11.26 1 $11.26
    90430-16007 Gasket $2.85 1 $2.85

    Subtotal: $14.11
Estimated Shipping to 32506 via Standard Shipping: $9.87
    Tax: $1.80
    Total: $25.78
Called the local Toyato Dealership and talk with a service advisor. I need to mention her that service advisors ARE NOT Mechanics. He insisted it was part of the VVT itself. After I gave him the part numbers for the filter and gasket he told me that called for 4 hours labor at $165 an hour which would be $660. I asked him if he was out of his mind and just huge up the phone.
So I'm hoping that when I get the filter and gasket and replace them on the driver's side, the problem is resolved once and for all. If not, I just keep clearing the code every 5 to 7 days! Any ideas if the VVT filter and gasket doesn't resolve the P0022 Code?

It "could" also be the timing chain.
But like was said in an earlier post. When you replace a VVT Sensor, you should also replace/clean the filter.

You can always pull the the inspection cover for the timing chain tensioner.
See how far "out" it is. The further out, the more the chain has stretched.

Here's the final summary that I did to clear the P0022 Code: (1) replaced the VVT on the driver's side cylinder head, (2) replaced both VVT filters (the one on the driver's side is labor intensive), (3) cleaned both cam sensors. It has been a few days now and the code has not come back. Thank Goodiness!
