I've been the proud owner of a 3rd gen Tacoma with a long travel suspension for about six years now. I regularly drive above 10,000 feet and sometimes above 14,000. I'm starting to feel the need for some extra power. I'm seriously considering forced induction to help with performance at high altitudes.

I'm planning to keep this truck for many more years, but I'm concerned about its reliability as it ages. Cost is not my primary concern; I'm more focused on finding a solution that balances performance and reliability.

Here are a few options I'm considering:

    1. 2gr-Fks: Turbocharging is looking really ideal for me given the wide range of altitude changes. More power is always nice, but it sucks when you can't hold 2nd gear driving on asphalt . I would love to use an electronic waste gate to hold cylinder fill at 100% no matter the altitude. Do I just overhaul the entire engine every 100k miles for long term reliability.

    2. Engine Swap: I've seen some discussions about LS swaps and other engine replacements. What are the pros and cons of doing an engine swap versus adding forced induction? How complex is the swap process, and what are the potential pitfalls? How the hell do I do 4wd?

Maintaining 4WD is a must for me, I get a lot of snow where I live. Any insights, experiences, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to Taco performance but I can add this, boost is great when you stay at relatively the same elevation as your base tune, but once you start seeing big changes in elevation you can see a significant performance drop. Most tunes attempt to compensate with pressure change, but it's always a calculated guess. A good tuner should be able to dial it in, but it might take multiple attempts.
