    I run 5w30 but honestly the oil cooling system is quite good on these trucks and keeps the oil temps in check well (towing is a different story). Obviously not saying don't run 5w-30 but 0w-20 wouldn't hurt it in the heat either (towing is a different story)

    Also in the owners manual, it does state a high viscosity oil is acceptable in certain circumstances.

    Driving around town on a 32*C (90*F)day I'll sit in the high 90*C (194*F) range. Highway consistently sits around 80-85*C(175-185*F) range at the same ambient temp. I don't have a oil temp monitor. Just read it off the scan tool the other day for fun so I don't have more data.

    0w30 is what I run and I’m at 191k now going strong without issues. Yeah I also use Amsoil signature series but Valvoline and Pennzoil are about as good on short term intervals per analysis I’ve had. My engine is showing very very minimal wear

    FWIW, all the Japanese brand vehicles that I’ve owned, got better MPGs and drove better on at least 91E0.

    My truck has been getting at least 91E0 after dealers fill, now 94E0.

    Drives absolutely amazing.

    @jneutron

    What was the temperature when this occurred? Was it hot? Were you by any chance driving with a very light gas pedal for a mile or so before coming to a stop. In other words, just driving slow with the gas pedal pushed in 1 or 2% approaching a stop light or something?

    If you have access to. Obd2 scanner, what is the KCLV before and after this happens?

    As mentioned, run a good fuel system cleaner to help clean injectors. LSPI is generally caused by oil not the fuel. As others have mentioned, it’s quite common for these motors to knock on 87 in high heat. Poor fuel injection spray patterns will exacerbate the problem. Premium fuel and bottle B12 chemtool should to help clear it up.

    Update - finally got around to addressing the knocking/pinging (don't drive the truck much as of late). Put Shell 91 in it from a local know gas station and a bottle of Techron. So far, seems to have fixed the issue - based on a few short drives.
    Thanks all for the input!
