This apparently happens when selectin 4 LO without selecting Neutral first. However, I've been told by an ASE-certified mechanic that it also happens when 4 Lo hasn't been used for a long time, and it's true for all makes that have automatic transmissions. He also recommends that Lo should be selected every few months to "exercise" the mechanism and keep everything loosened up.
Does anyone have any input confirming or denying this recommendation as a preventive maintenance procedure?

The wisdom of periodically exercising 4H, 4L and diff lock is well established and mentioned frequently in this forum and other sites. Monthly seems to be consensus on frequency - though I probably only remember quarterly. 'Use it or lose it' kinda thing. check out car care nut's youtube piece on the 3rd gen Tacoma 4WD system

The Toyota owner's manual states N before engaging 4L and it also recommends 4WD (not specifically 4L) for 10 miles a month.
You should DL a copy, it's a good read.

What I do is I use 4 Low when I am at a particular place with dirt or gravel roads I visit once or twice a month. I go to a gun range once or twice a month. It is a gun range, gun range, like real extra gun rangey, out in an old mined out area. You know, hid in the woods all gun rangey and stuff. The roads/paths through the place are gravel and dirt. So after I stop to open the gate that is my mental cue to place my truck into 4 low. This way I keep my 4 low mechanisms all exercised once or twice a month. For 20 years now: Gun range = Put truck into 4 low. You can figure something similar. Think of a place you occasionally visit and make that your official 4 Low spot.
