The serious off-roader isn't the market for these trucks.

I guess the trim names of "Trail Hunter" and "Off Road" and their price tags are just marketing ploys to take your money. In all seriousness, I do think these trucks are competing for a good share of the off road market consumer, and the video is just one point of view on the trucks we have a love/hate relationship with. I really like my Off Road Tacoma.

Of course, they are. Who takes a $50-60,000 truck on serious off-roading?

Yeah, but if anyone does it without sliders, it'll be a disaster.

I watched this video last year when it first came out. I think there were/are some misconceptions about the 3” wider track width. While it does appear to be true that the only difference between the 2024 TRD Pro and other current trims is the wheel offset and fender flares. However, I believe what Toyota was referring to was the new Pro has a 3” wider track than the previous generation (model?). A quick look at the offset numbers for the current and previous generation and you’ll see that the difference in track width is not due to wheel offset. Whether this actually means the 4th gen has more travel, I don’t know.

I would expect more travel on the 2024 vs the 2023, but the part that intrigues me the most is whether the TRD OR has the same travel as the TRD Pro or Trail Hunter..... this I need to know...

Yeah I would put my money on there being more travel with the 4th gen. Someone needs to get a Pro on a ramp and measure travel.

That said, the new OR is very capable in stock form, to the point that 5100s might not be much, if any, of an upgrade anymore.

I’m hoping it is so I can replace the stock 4x4 suspension with OR take off’s.

I would not take this truck on any rock crawlnig adventures. It feels alot more nimble than a full size and unlike SXSs, has AC and no dust. Its more of an offroad exploration vehicle and I think its perfect for that.

    Billings Canyon?

There's an entire "Overlanding" industry aka "expensive tent camping" industry that really tries to push this paradigm. No winch? Can't off road. No RTT? Can't overland. No solar? Stay home. No on board air compressor? Have fun dying in the desert. No traction boards? Don't you love your wife? No roof rack? Stay home and eat soft food.

It's an industry that perverted the term "build" from actually making things with your hands to slapping 600lbs of powder coated bolt on shit requiring the same skill level as assembling an Ikea TV stand.

In some ways it's good. I need duplo level simplicity. But at the end of the day, it was an industry that identified fools with money and sought to part them as quickly as possible. Stock configured, the stock trims even SR5, are perfectly fine to go nearly any places a reasonable person would ever want or need to go.

I agree, mostly. While I’m commuting, I’m not carrying around a tent on my roof or 400 pounds of other off-road gear. The SR5 4x4 will take me 95% or more of the places more expensive trims go. The one exception is tires, don’t go off road more than a dirt road with the SR5 tires. Upgrade to good quality KO2’s or Wildpeaks. 98% of OR competency is your tires.
