this didn't come factory fitted but was OEM (now 17 months old) - "old man step"

I noticed today that the top coating has peeled off.

Any ideas on how to fix this? My first though was Hammerite, but these days there's a lot more options available.

If you got this from some dealer I'd go back and say hey WTF is this.
I wouldn't trust it to handle 100 pounds of weight.

Mine is 3 years old and still looks fine.

that looks like a bad anodized or some sort of baked on coating, I don't think spray paint is going to adhere for any length of time.

Looks like aluminum oxidizing under the powder coat. If you clean it off the spray paint it might hold in that area, but the rest of the powder coat will keep going.

That is corrosion from salt/brine applied to the roads. All it takes is a chip, or a small void, and the process starts. You dont see it, until the corrosion releases the top coat of the finish. My suggestion would be to see if you can get it covered under warranty (doubtful). If not, have it media blasted, and LineX coated. I did that with my running boards on 2 trucks, and I am very happy with the results. Ski

yeah this design has a flaw, water sits in a small dip right where it's peeled away

I took some black semi-gloss oil based that I had from me painting our metal hand rail for the house steps outside. Dabbed it on with a small paintbrush on the truck steps. Looks 90% better.

Getting rid of corrosion is the first step. How far under the original finish does it go? I'm having bubbling under the finish on my dealer installed running boards and it's only been on the road for 9 months!

Ain't nothing structurally concerning just fugly surface corrosion. My opinion; Learn to love it or buy a new one.

yeah I just wanted to tidy it up as it can't be seen unless I'm using it - also so it doesn't creep to the whole piece

i think the clear suggestion here is that you need to get a new one, and we all need to move to where corrosion doesn't exist.

should i start the official tacomaworld migration gofundme?

i'm sure california and arizona have plenty of space for another 2 million people...
