Trying to figure out the Tacomas manual transmission

I’ve had my 21 manual Tacoma for a bit now and am starting to get the hang of the transmission but there’s one thing I can’t figure out. No matter what rpm I shift at I always get a thunk when I have the clutch fully pushed to the floor and move the shifter from first to second. I can get the shifts to be smooth but there’s always that noise. Is this normal? It sounds like the input and output shaft matching speed but I would think if I matched the rpm’s perfectly it wouldn’t make the noise but it still does. Thank you for any insight.

I hear that every now and then in mine. I’ve mostly driven manuals for my 40 years of driving. All kinds of manuals. Whenever this one does anything peculiar I remind myself that it’s a truck. It doesn’t want to be shifted super fast, it has some rev hang that I’ve learned to use to rev match into the next gear, it can be noisy and unhappy when you bog it down with too low of RPMs, it’s not buttery smooth like a Honda, and it requires a bit more skill than most. But there is nothing wrong with it and I wouldn’t trade it for an automatic. You can do the accumulator delete and it probably helps a bit. I thought about it when I first got mine but over the past year I got it smoothed out and don’t need to.

Yeah the shifts are mostly smooth albeit not all the time but even when they are I just get that thunk when the shifter goes from first to second before I even start releasing the clutch. I just wanted to make sure it was normal.

I get a thunk when I shift into 5th gear, all other gears pretty smooth. Haven't installed the accumulator delete yet. I shift pretty slow and sometimes even center it in neutral briefly before completing the shift, if that makes sense.

You've got to drop the clutch tap the gas to get your RPM's up a bit (that's mostly just feel and practice depending on what gear your in and where you're headed down the line) then change gears and let it out a bit slower so it catches in the right spot and you'll lost that thunk. Burn a bit more gas but that's the whole point of a manual in my opinion. Fun to try and use your breaks as little as possible lol. Also I could be totally wrong but mine drives nice without a clunk that way. P.S. I'm no pro so take it or leave it.

Yes it makes barely audible thunk. It almost sounds like a ball falling and bouncing a couple times inside the tranny. I can only hear it in the 1-2 shift when the windows are open. It’s normal.

Gotcha I tried babying it as well as shifting more around 2500 and it does the same thing. Even if I’m slowing down I can shift in and out of second and still get a thunk while costing.

It's normal if you shift it quick and firm. The R150F's in my first gen Tacomas and I think my 2nd gen X-Runner had the same quirk.

Sorry I'm dumb and forgot how to read for a sec. I notice the same going 1st to 2nd but only when I'm going real slow once in a while. If you have the opportunity to really push it in first to about 3-5K rpms then mine seems to like that much more. Give it a push when you can sometimes unavoidable. It's gotten better as I've driven it though. Is it still low miles?

Mines a little more audible but I didn’t have any music on when listening.

It only has 19k on it so it might be kinda low for break in? And I’m usually going pretty slow when it happens probably less than 25

That's pretty much exactly where mine is at and I've started to hear it less and less as I approach the 20K mark. Lemme know if you keep hearing yours.

I suspect it’s the drivers getting broken in rather than the transmission.

Will do, I’ll probably mention it when I bring it in for the AC and diff whistle TSB in the coming weeks.

Could be however I wasn’t able to make the noise change with changes in shifting.

Could be the case but you can't prove a counterfactual lol.

I meant that drivers get used to hearing and stop worrying about it. It doesn’t change with shifting technique or miles driven in my experience either.

It would definitely be less noticeable if I didn’t hyper fixate on it and focused more on shifting than listening
