What? Whipsaw Trail When? 8/8-8/11 Where? https://www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/british-columbia/whipsaw-trail Plan is to meet up the evening of 8/8 here https://www.gaiagps.com/datasummary/track/3972ba5a2696d3cfcf118f301a8c6bc8 and camp. On the morning of 8/9 we will enter Canada at the Nighthawk border crossing and the trail is a hour and a half away. We will camp two nights on the trail. Finish and head home Sunday. It’s a mild trail do your homework. Things could break and things probably more than likely will touch your truck. Participants 1. @TomHGZ 2. @stonylaroux 3. @Shadowhunter4. @bjohn041

If it’s muddy on the right side of this section, I advise to take the bypass unless you’re willing to sacrifice a taillight and/or bedside :D

Even if it was on fire I bet that damn spot would still be muddy lol. I went last year about this time frame and still plenty o mud. Gets pretty cold at night still up in elevation so bring more warm clothes than you think you need as well!

Final group was myself, @bjohn041 and @TomHGZ

The wheeling is some of the best I've ever done! I would highly recommend doing the trail. It's not even that far away. We were only able to do about half the trail and turned back the same direction we came from. I will be back again.

We came, we conquered, and then we got conquered.

Damn....you guys rebuilt a diff on the trail/at camp? That's epic. How was setting the preload/backlash? Never touched a toyota diff before.

Great pics/vids stony! I am putting this trail on my list now.

    Yep!

Lol, we hadn't touched one either before then. We just took off the broken ring gear out and put the rest of it back into the housing. I don't even know what preload/backlash is. A put it together the same way you took it apart situation.

@TomHGZ truck is out in my shop undergoing surgery right now. Things are happening, things that we aren’t sure that’s been done before but it’s coming together pretty nicely.

Just installed a 3rd gen OR axle with the 8.75 diff and 4.30 gears under my 2nd Gen Tacoma. It turned out to be a direct swap!

@Shadowhunter came to the rescue with his knowledge of brake drums to fish out the 3rd gen e-brake ends and reconnect mine to the new axle. All in all, the swap was pretty straightforward.

I also worked with Josh at Freedom Locker/ Experimental Designs (@ExpirementalBiz on IG), who developed a custom wiring harness for me to operate the 3rd Gen locker in my 2nd Gen truck. Stay tuned for details — he’s going to offer this wiring harness for sale soon!

While we were under the truck, we installed Bilstein 5160 shocks for a 2021 Tundra in rear, to maximize travel and provide increased damping for my heavy truck. These turned out to be a huge upgrade from my B110’s. Also threw some @ARCHIVE Hammer Hangers under there and some chopped bumpstops from a Ford F250 to fill the gap until/ if I decide to get something different. Again, big thanks to @Shadowhunter for the help.

And yes, I limped back from Canada to Seattle in front wheel drive, with a front autolocker to boot. @JasonLee

I've been casually looking for the same axle to do the same swap on mine, nice work guys. Good to know about the tundra shocks as well, I was looking into 7100's. Ran the whipsaw 5 years ago, still my favorite trail i've done.

I might be wrong but I don’t think you can find 7100’s with a stem top in an appropriate length for our trucks. Note, to fit Tundra shocks you just grind about 1/8” off each side of the lower bushing sleeve — or you can press the bushings out and replace them with the appropriate width bushings.

You will also want aftermarket leaf packs to gain the benefit of Tundra shock length.
