A/C system stops working after a few seconds of running. Took it to the dealer for diagnosis and it came back with faulty compressor code. We got the compressor replaced at a different shop and it still doesn’t work. The shop is stumped and suggested we try to replace the control unit but stated they really weren’t sure if that would work or not. Found one online and that didn’t do the job either. We’ve got $1500 invested in this and still no AC! Any thoughts on what else it could be? System was recharged after the compressor was replaced.

I’d take it to a more compitent tech/shop,, playing swap-a-part can get even more expensive and frustrating, then paying a real tech to diagnose the actual problem.

Sorry you got taken for a ride.

    You have the code?
Apparently they threw parts at it and never actually diagnosed the issue.
I'd be asking for some labor money back.

I mean, the parts are on you. You bought them. But labor.....nahhh
    I'd be negotiation.

Again, any idea on what code was set?

It's most likely the magnetic clutch for the compressor. My AC shit the bed the first summer I had the truck in about May, and it was covered under warranty to be replaced. The dealer told me we had to wait for parts, which was fine. It took until almost November to get the parts. They told me the compressor was there, but they were waiting on a back order for parts to replace the clutch as well, because in their experience when compressor dies it usually brings the clutch with it, I suggested just doing the work to replace the compressor to see, and they basically insisted.

Long story short, AC works great.

The Toyota dealer provided us with the diagnosis. Not sure what code it gave but the quote they printed out for us showed compressor replacement with evac and recharge. We’re taking it back to the dealer today. After arguing that we shouldn’t have to pay for another diagnostic they grudgingly agreed to run another one. I should mention none of this started until we installed a new light bar. We told them about the light bar and our suspicion that it might be related and they’ve concluded that it’s not. The A/C worked fine up until then though… :annoyed:

It makes for a tough argument when you have one shop diagnose, and another do the repairs,,, leaves them both the option to point the finger at the other.
Be inquisitive, ask for a break down of what exactly is wrong, what each item costs and costs to install, what is the warranty, are they going guarantee this is the fix? etc
