Well I took the day off work for my birthday. I spent the morning with my girl, then went out to the hot garage to sand the workbench top down. I broke out the bosch 4x24 belt sander, this thing is a beast!
    20240708_144503.jpg
The paper I had was very old and it would last about a minute before the seam tape would break. Off to the local mom and pop hardware store to pick up some fresh 50 grit.
    20240708_144515.jpg
this was chainsaw milled, too wide for my planer.
    20240708_144529.jpg
All sanded down to 100 grit with a final ros sanding. Attached the can tray on the back too.

When i was cleaning the garage i found a gallon of this floor polyurethane. Its gotta be over 10 years old, opened the can and it wasnt even skinned over. Took a good stirring to get everything off the bottom, lol.

I layed it on heavy! It's going to soak right in though. Ash is pourus and this is very dry, milled it about 2011 if I remember correctly.
    20240708_164637.jpg
A very wet coat, probably get 1 or 2 more coats to seal it. Hopefully this old oil based polyurethane dries.

Happy Birthday! Hope you had a great one. The bench looks super.

I spent the last two days assembling crappy IKEA furniture in my son’s new apartment. I am 1500 miles away from all of my tools and even this easy stuff can be pretty frustrating.

Making good progress on my second table. Used red oak this time and got it grain matched. Not as many mistakes and I am getting it done faster than last time.

That's a horrible idea. What time?
We are nearing the finish line. My wife and I spent a miserable 10 days in the heat taping and staining the deck. No small feat! (About half was built by people who do that for a living. The rest was mostly me last summer.) Bar top is nearing completion. 1/2" round over done and first coat of varnish on. Hopefully installed by Friday. And then a glass if bourbon shall be consumed in honor if the occasion!

Calling it here. Three coats of Total Boat varnish Gleem satin. Will let it cure overnight and it goes on in the morning.

Had to correct a router mistake when I was trying to straighten the edge. Had a small strip of walnut in my scrap drawer that I glued and clamped in. Used a flush cut saw to get close and finished the profile with a sander. Tried to make it look I fixed a defect instead of a mistake.20240711_174231.jpg

    Looks great!

What flavor of taekwondo is he taking? It doesn't look like ATA because I don't remember them having that many belts. Granted, it's been about 6 years since I was going with my kid.

Speaking of which, I think they need to update their site if they're still using a picture with me in it.

(I'm the bearded guy holding the board the kid just broke)

    Very nice!

My 21yo son is a third degree black belt in TKD. He started when he was about 7 and stopped going when he went away for college.

I need to build him a display for all of them one of these days.

Installed. The empty space next to the grill will be butcher block and some grill tool hangers. Glad it's done, and we can walk through the garage now!

Thank you, but if plans come together, we're retiring and headed to Tennessee in the spring. We started all.of this last spring before our retirement pictures changed.
