    Good morning. Sorry, I didn’t reply last night, I never saw the notice you replied.

    Anyway, my $.02 is a hand held is a maybe, it depends on what your looking for. I started out with a GMRS hand held, not one of the bubble pack FRS radios but a 5 watt Baofeng UV-9G.

    Talking car to car with a buddy with the same radio we got about 1/2 mile of clear reception using the on radio antennas. Adding an external mag mount antenna and connecting the radio to it boosted the range to about 2 miles in the woods depending on tree cover. We could receive from a truck mounted mobile from about 6 miles away but couldn’t transmit to them, they could hear us break squelch but that’s it.

    Me and my buddy have both installed mobiles in the trucks and keep the hand helds for when we’re spotting each other or walking around camp comms. We also loan them out to people that don’t have radios so they can at least hear us but they usually work fine at typical group trail distances.

    If you’re looking for more range than this, check out the Radioddity DB-20G mobile radio. It comes shipped as GMRS but can be unlocked with a button press to allow full 2M/70 CM operation and GMRS. You can catch them on sale on Amazon or direct from Radioddity for about $120 shipped. It’s what I have in the truck.
