    this is in a 2006 v6 prerunner.

my friend blew the main shaft seal in his power steering pump, he lost all power steering and continued to drive home (5 minute drive) which sprayed the contents of the reservoir all over the engine bay and ground.
when he got home it was a bloodbath and the reservoir was bone dry.

i resealed his PS pump using the seal kit from the dealer using the FSM.
there was some noticeable scoring on the inside components but nothing major.

i put the pump back in his truck and there is close to zero power steering at idle.
any attempts to steer will make the pump whine very loudly.
revving the engine will make the pump whine but power steering will start working again

the next day, the pump seemed a little better, with a tiny bit more assist at idle but still poor performance and very loud.
the pump whines sometimes when turning the car with low rpm and low speed.
at normal speeds and rpms above 1200 its quiet and steering feels fine.

    is this pump toast?
i can upload videos if requested

Pump is probably toast based on the whole story. Hopefully it didn't toast the rack & pinion at the same time.

Some other fringe theories: If you didnt' bleed the system when putting it back together well that could be a problem too. Also depending on how good or bad the engine bay was cleaned after the carnage, if old fluid is still all over the belt or even just soaked in you could have the belt slipping at low rpm causing the power loss. Belt tensioner could be getting weak too, but for all that to happen simultaneously is a little suspect. I still say it's the pump.

Belt is pretty stiff and cracked all over. I am going to replace it and see if that does anything.
I attempted to bleed the system multiple times and that didn't do anything. it did suck down some fluid though.

Can I continue driving the truck with the pump whining at low speeds? Do I risk ruining the rack and pinion doing so? Or can I just keep driving until I throw a new one in?

Here's a video of the fluid in the reservoir while turning the wheel:

Check the inlet screen to make sure it’s clear, pumps will whine when they have fluid starvation

what fluid did you put in there?

how do you check the inlet screen? I believe the resevoir is a one-piece unit

Sounds toast. If it ran without oil when the seal blew or with air in the system that will trash the pump.

Truck is old with miles. Probably needs a pump.
