So I have a one year old, bought new 2023 SR dc 4x4 that got totaled and am getting only $1k under what I paid for it out the door brand new, I put a deposit down instantly on a 2024 SR 4x4 in black that is coming in 4-6 weeks, now I read that the 4 cyl in the SR is gimped to provide WORSE torque and HP than the v6 did in my 2023. On top of that I am paying almost 5k more(after taxes, will be owning outright) and getting NO MPG benefits(was getting 22mpg combined in my 2023 in the city with stock tires). I am thinking about just buying a rav4 hybrid or something and just use it for my daily for the next few years and sell it once the 4th gen has had more time to get the kinks worked out. Has anyone actually drove the 2024 SR and felt how it drives can give me their opinion? I thought the v6 was reliable but obviously slow, I cant image a modern engine with lower HP/Torque in a modern truck.

I am blown away by this and dissapointed but atleast I found all of this out now and can make my decision before the truck gets here.

Maybe Toyota will pull it's head from it's ass on this D-tuned SR. Toyota just put the same t4 in all the trucks, also find a way to get the performance #s up on the Pro. Halo trucks neeps Halo hp.

My understanding is that GM got rid of their D-tuned 2.7t and have the same specs across the board, to be fair the ZR2 should put out more power over the other Colorados being the Halo.

I'd just go for the SR5 if you really want the Toyota. The D-tuned engine turns me off as a customer. Same thing over in Tundra land, don't know if any of that has changed since 2022.

I'd be curious if the drivetrain components are the exact same. If they are, it may be as simple as getting a VF tune done to regain the horsepower that it should have had stock.

I'm curious the 0-60 on sr5 auto vs SR auto. I suspect the SR is gonna be more similar to the global hilux than the sr5.

I don't think they have the intercooler for the turbo, but am not sure on that point. I've also read somewhere they don't have the oil cooler.

Damn, no intercooler would be a pretty crazy design decision even for a de-tuned engine. Really hope that's not true

Cant speak to the '24 SR (WTF detune it. Toyota?), but our '22 Rav4-H is probably the best Toyota vehicle we've owned. It has great acceleration, is comfortable, functional, and beats its EPA-estimated MPG with ease.

Supposedly missing an oil cooler as well. If I was looking for a 4dr, I'd skip the SR and go for the SR5 with the rear link.

The possibility of a tune is great for people who already have the SR. I don't think I'd buy a truck if I thought it needed more performance no matter what the aftermarket has to offer.

Toyota might be thinking that fleet owners (SR's biggest buyer) don't need their folks driving around in a 300hp machine and appreciate the lower price.

For me it would really depend on what hardware is on the truck stock. If it has the intercooler and oil cooler of the SR5, and was $$$$ cheaper, it would make a lot of sense to get the SR and pay ~$500 to get it tuned. Would need to drive the IRS truck vs the leaf spring truck to see if it felt better enough to make the price increase worth it.

Maybe a dumb question, but for the price difference, why not upgrade to an SR5?

Even if you ignore the loss of HP and Torque, the lower tow rating is a real deal killer.

I can get an SR 4x4 DC for $38.5+tax. a SR5 DC 4x4 starts at around $42-$44k without TTYL 4-6k difference is why for me.

Why not just buy a slightly used 3rd gen?

Careful, if you do this, you might not want to ever go back to a Tacoma; we love ours

It's *only* got 220 hp, but it feels like a rally car compared to the 4Runner (probably on par acceleration with a 4x4 Tacoma). Weighing several hundred pounds less and having fewer driveline losses make a big difference.

If you don't need a truck or heavy offroad capability, the on road comfort and efficiency of a crossover is hard to turn down.

if it were my money, I'd get a certified used 2023 and wait a few years for the 4th gen to shake out.

Simple truck, low options/less things to go wrong, utilitarian, that’s why I’m thinking of one. Need to drive one though, surprised no SR vs SR5 drag race videos on youtube, it would make a good one.

Why not a clean 2016? That would be the best ROI, 2016 and 2023 basically the same.

Can you find a similar SR at a dealership somewhere and take it for a test drive?
