Recently wrapped up this small porch replacement. 2.5 days. Old posts were just sitting in the dirt and none of the nails used were galvanized. No nails for me, all GRK & Simpson screws. Hangers/connectors in all the proper locations. Joist tape on all horizontal/flat framing surfaces. Added proper footings, cut new custom stringers so stairs wouldn't end up in the ground...added an additional step for safety/comfort. Always 2x6 stock for stair treads. High traffic/use area and they are more solid/hold up better than using decking material. Supported it properly with a 4x4 beam underneath. Way overbuilt, but it'll last. I always try to calculate the joist length (using decking material width) so that I end up with full deck boards all around. It's just math and imo, looks much better than a narrow piece up against the house or at the end. See that all the time. Added crushed stone for better drainage. Hoping it dries out in time to get a coat of stain on before winter.

 

We were fortunate that Hurricane Beryl didn’t do any damage to our house or our property. However, we have one shingle that was flapping around a bit in the high winds. There isn’t any water damage in the house and I also checked the attic and it’s dry. How urgent is it that I get a roofer to look at it?

Thanks. I sent the picture to the roofer who did some repairs for me last year and asked him to check it out when he has time. After looking at it, he says that I'm lucky because he's having to full-on replace a lot of roofs because of this storm. I told him that we are both lucky and grateful.

Finally got the ground cleared to start building another shop, 16x32'. The dog kennel was my firewood storage for 30yrs, held 5 cords.

 

Any ideas on this gap? I tried a block on the reverse inside - nothing. Tried lifting them together with a jack, nothing... but the trim is level and true. Move on?

Thats where I mount the posts to cover the seams. If left uncovered next year that gap will be bigger.

 

In pic #1 are the boards joined with a beveled (mitred) connection ?

 

Used a Behr one part epoxy on the utilities side of my basement. I had etched and pressure washed it about a month ago and finally got around to actually laying the epoxy.

I would have used a more durable 2-part epoxy if it were a garage or somewhere with more than just light foot traffic. I did top this with a low gloss concrete sealer. Hopefully this holds up decently.

Bottom line, you can't build a deck of wood, like a piece of furniture. Looks great for a little while, then nature takes over.

 

what can happen in a mitred joint like that , especially across wider stock is that if either board has a cup or a twist , the blade of the saw will contact the high points on the board first , following the curvature of the board being cut so when you put two boards together that have slightly different profiles due to slight differences in how much they are cupped , the mitre cuts can never actually close as the two opposing cuts are not actually a flat plane when they come together

I no longer use 45 degree cuts to join boards unless its an outside corner , I go with 22.5 which sort of helps to limit that deviation , sometimes square cuts with dominos or some other fixing thst can be glued is the most reliable

 

I've been really busy with work, and coaching summer league 6th grade basketball. So I'm falling behind schedule. We have basketball championships this weekend after that im going camping.

It will remain an infinity deck for at most 2 months. I've replaced some of the shitty boards in this photo. I am NOT a wood worker... this is a 7k Non-woodworker homemade deck... But I built a 10x22 deck, perfect for grilling, drinking beer.

When I calculated my board spacing I originally used 1/8. When I laid the decking I ended up with 3/16th which caused the 2.5 inch ripped board at the threshold.

This ^ 100%. I also stopped using 45* bevels years ago as Oz. I now use 30* at joints on straight runs. It helps with this but there are still some boards with more extreme cups that are noticeable.

Doing some painting in the bathroom, let me tell you this primer will make you taste sounds! It's potent stuff in an enclosed space, despite the window open



Despite two coats of the primer, it STILL is bleeding nicotine, albeit a little less.



Just one of several spots. Despite cleaning and shellac priming. I got one more thing to try before overlaying 1/4" drywall over the entire ceiling.

Also wanted to replace the old stained ivory switches with white. This is the fuckery they used to jump power between switches
