Its just Toyota following government regulations so they don't get fined.

People also should look at the fine print in the 2024 manual:

Oil grade:ILSAC GF-6A multigrade engine oil
    Recommended viscosity: SAE 0W-20

    It's RECOMMENDED 0w-20.

    Further down the page:

SAE 0W-20 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather

Doesn't sound like a mandate. It sounds like it's a recommendation. It's the "best choice" if your target is good fuel economy and cold weather. Maybe I don't live somewhere cold? Maybe I don't care about .05mpg extra on my truck because it's 96F and I have a 2500 mile trip ahead. So what should someone use? Well, the mandate is to find an ILSAC GF-6A oil.

So what meets ILSAC GF-6A? The oil needs the API starburst on the front "For Gasoline Engines." There's a short list of oil grades too. Here's a reference: GF-6 FAQs | Team Valvoline (valvolineglobal.com) Item 7.

ILSAC GF-6A can be used to meet GF-5 oil recommendations and earlier. GF-6A products will display the “Starburst” API mark. GF-6A is backwards compatible, meaning it encompasses GF1-5 standards as well and is designed for SAE grades 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30, and 10W-30.

In other words, 5W-30 or 10W-30 would be just fine in the 2024 Tacomas. It's not the "recommended oil" but it absolutely meets the standard directly from the owners manual. This matches exactly the graphs above. Every oil on that list is in the ILSAC GF-6A viscosity range. Not a coincidence.

GDI + Turbo has so much risk for fuel dilution it floors me they spec 20 weight. That leaves no margin for viscosity decreases during an interval.

I run 30 weight in my 2gr-fks because of fuel dilution. I’d hate to add a turbo on top if it.

"Damn, shit... fuckin oil everywhere!" LOL thanks that's great. But seriously I haven't seen oil that thin before, it almost flows like water or something! I'm glad I watched this. Now I know what to expect.

Great write up. I use foil to make various chutes/drain paths on some of our vehicles if the oil can't flow directly into the catch container.

There's this thing called a Form A Funnel you can use to make little ramps for fluids. Home - Form a Funnel

But I'll give you a pro tip: it's the exact same thing as a Sam Splint or generic aluminum padded splint. And you can pay $25 for a form a funnel, or get the same thing for $7 on Amazon.

    https://www.amazon.com/Ever-Ready-First-Aid-Universal/dp/B000FPGGC6

These are super easy to cut and form with just a pair of scissors. Just be mindful to blunt the edge after cutting because it will be sharp.

Step 1. Lay down a 50lb sack of floor dry.
    Step 2. Drain oil.

Yeah, that oil shoots out like it's under high pressure. Blew out of my pan, all over the lift and the floor before I got it under control. I'll have to come up with a solution. I realize they want all that oil to cool this turbo engine, but seriously 6 quarts in a 4 cylinder??? Toyota Care will only change it every 10k miles. I'm doing mine every 3

I started using one of these for my oil changes. No more oil bouncing off the bottom and out or hitting the rim and splattering everywhere. Very inexpensive and shows you exactly what you’ve drained.

Curious about the thread on both the filters between both 90915-10009(Japan)and 90915-YZZN1(Thailand)

what is it 3/4-16 or M20x1.5? Is there specific design tolerances or adaptations. Anyone confirm specifications?
