Had a little railroad tie crossing/bridge in one of the ditches down on the trails.... It was rotting out & not safe to drive across & had a left over piece of double wall culvert about 7' long.

Today was finally caught up enough to not feel guilty about going over the hill a bit & doing that.
Took the Cat over & grabbed the culvert then headed down to the front section over the hill.
Was a 20min tram to the hill drop over. Had to put the bucket down on the ground with the culvert still on it & the blade. Balance all that & go down the hill as straight as possible. Any movement to the side would have been a disaster.
This is about a 30* slope, so its all you wanted on the way down in the mud. Fun fun fun.

Best way to improve my skills is time in the seat. Got down there & dropped the culvert off then started tearing out the railroad ties with the Cat. Its fun learning to balance the tie on the bucket lift it, swing it & then move them around a bunch. After about half an hour had them all out & was cleaning out the ditch. Man it was plugged up with tree's & all kind of stuff that I didn't know was in there!

Finally got it cleared out & leveled & stuck the culvert in. Already had a pile of rock & block there from over the years.

Bedded it in & then filled over it & rocked both ends. Tracked it in & bucket stomped it. Then motored my way back up the hill & put Cat away.


THIS is how retirement is supposed to be! Doing some fun stuff that you want to do instead of "have" to do things.

man that sounds like a fun time. envy your time in a positive way. im currently enjoying the half way mark on my home commute of 4hours. long time for 25 miles.

I drive 45 miles one way to work and it takes me 55 minutes

 

yep. ferry travel in washington. when all the helmet wearing specials decicde to load the vanagonosh to travel. ugh. i got home at 6. left work at 230. shoot

 

You can keep that ferry. Everyone I have worked with who did the ferry hated it. They wound up staying over there and getting work local. Problem is Seattle is the higher pay. I drive about 50 miles one way there from Sultan and I can get there under an hr in the early morning and he and half to 2 going home.

 

id like that if i had a choice. sometimes its 20min each way.

 

Would have been faster to drive around through the Narrow and Bremerton...

 

That’s the issue here. Not enough big roads to choose from. North/South you got I5. That’s it. East/West you got water and bridges/ferries. Going around is the last resort but a gamble when things back up. It’s getting busy here and they aren’t doing much to help it besides award companies with on/off ramps and a handful of extra lanes here and there. There’s just no room for improvement with the growth. Everyone’s moving out of town and my commutes have seen more and more people out on the roads early in the morning. Summer trips don’t help the issue. Specially when your behind some brodozer piled high with water craft and a camper in tow. One of these days I’m peacing out of this shit show

 

Used the brush hog for the first time today. Worked awesome, but the tractor was running too hot. Got some new front wheels and 7-16 tires for it too.

well said man. its just no good. reason i moved to peninsula. my trade is a dying craft and few of us left so sometimes i have to be seattle side for work. my ferry is paid and 1/2 travel time. price to pay for my lil' slice of heaven.

 

Hose does look kinked, it also looks like a universal hose from an auto parts store. Have you tried washing the radiator from the outside? Mine runs warm when it gets a lot of debris and dirt on it.

 

My JD 2025 has a screen in front of the radiator that needs hosed out quite a bit.

 

Well at least you're getting something for your travel time. I never lived on the peninsula, though I delivered to Bremerton somewhat often. When I was younger I though riding on the ferries was fun, the views were great. But it didn't take me long to get annoyed with the delays/timing issues on the ferries. If you time it right you could have a good commute, but if you're off just a little you're going to have a much longer day. I worked with a guy who lived on Anderson Island; he spent a lot of nights on his MILs couch because he missed that last ferry.

 

yes. i dont like it. i deal with it so i can own land to play on. just got fresh gas for the atv and cold beer. im going to be semi productive today!

 

WLB: man that's a commute!

There was some times when work was thin that we had to do 3hrs each way...
But that was 150miles each way too....

6hrs driving & a 12hr shift makes for a lot of long days. But it was always just for a few weeks at a time. Any longer than that in distance or days there & we get a room.

Got a buddy who lives in atlanta. Some days it takes him an hour to get 12miles from his work to home. Id move.

Now for the fella with the new hog on his tractor:
Make sure the radiator is clean, fix that kinked hose & above all else make sure you are running that tractor at high enough RPM! If you are lugging it or running it too slow? It will run hotter cause the water pump ain't turning fast enough & moving that water thru the radiator.

Its a real common thing for guys to "putter" their tractors & then they over heat. Same thing with most equipment. Its designed for a certain RPM & flow.

 

Yeah it’s not the OEM hose that’s for sure. Going to do a waterpump, thermostat and new hoses asap

 

Thanks for the advice. Going to change the waterpump, t stat and hoses. The waterpump has play in it anyways. I was running about 1500 RPM

 

yeah. this is fuct but i deal with a shy hand of cards most of my life.

 

only for a few months.... easier than taking a pro chef out to dinner. eff me. that went like salt in the eyes..
