I know there are hundreds of threads about taco tick but so far I haven’t heard one like what my truck has. So about a month ago I had my check engine light come on and it turned out to be an o2 sensor upstream passanger side. Well ever since I started it up after changing it, I got a new ticking noise. Now I know that an o2 sensor can’t really cause a ticking sound but it literally started right after I changed it. In person most of the time it kind if sounds like an exhaust leak. Funny thing is though, like this morning for example, I started my truck with it being about 40 degrees outside and it was making the sound. As I was driving to work, like 3 minutes after starting the vehicle, it went away completely and the engine sounded like the regular valvetrain tick. Then about a minute and a half later it started again and got louder after the vehicle was completely warm. I would normally consider this the taco tick but with the fact it comes and goes and it more apparent than anything else in the engine it is kind of bugging me. Here is a video of it.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Plus there at the end you can hear a tick that sounds like either piston slap or rod knock starting. I don’t hear it below the engine much nor on top of the engine much. I hear it the absolute most right in the middle of the engine on the driver side in the wheel well.

How many miles are on the truck? My guess would be piston slap.. I know my 2015 makes a little knocking noise on a really cold morning at start up for about a minute or 2.. I was going to say an exhaust leak, but you would hear it just about all the time regardless of the outside temp.

Well I can hear it all the time but it’s less noticable at higher rpms. The truck only has 49,000 miles on it

Sounds similar to an exhaust leak. Is possible that you cross threaded the sensor in and it didnt seat properly, thus causing a leak?

Well the odd thing about it is the one I changed was bank 1 sensor 1 which upper passanger side. And the noise can only be heard on the drivers side. Eiethwr in the cabin but it’s also a lot louder when you stick your head in the wheel well on the driver side. It sounds exactly like its coming from the bottom of the exhaust manifold but there is no black soot on the bottom of it and I can’t smell any exhaust at all but it’s pretty loud. Can be hard whether engine is cold or hot but it’s very quiet when cold and very loud right as soon as it hits operating temp. Like you can actually listen to it get louder and louder in the cabin. It’s not a small increase in noise, it’s a decent amount

$5 says exhaust leak at the 02 sensor that changes a bit as the metal heats up. You hear it on the drivers side because the sound is bouncing around.

Thanks for the replies you all. It actually turns out it is the Evap making that ticking noise. It’s louder than what it use to be for sure but that is exactly what is making the noise.

I have a 2TRFE that runs rough at idle but didn't notice the ticking noise. So I cleaned the intake and plate on the throttle body. Now idling between 670 to 700 rpm and ticking sound is there. So it must be normal.
