My wife and I eloped 26 years ago. We were young and broke. I would still do the same.

I think people just don’t care about etiquette anymore.
I went to a wedding recently where one of the groomsmen showed up at the very last minute and nobody had heard from him for the 6 months before the wedding. He agreed to be a groomsman, then went MIA until 5 minutes before the wedding.

    Congratulations!

5 years ago, marriage was the best move I've ever made.

I'm also middle aged on my first and only marriage, so we just skipped any and all of the crap that always follows a weddings and went and got married by ourselves in the Colorado mountains, then had a reception for the whole family when we returned.

If you have the right SO marriage is a wonderful thing.
Everything else will work itself out IMHO.

    Congrats.

Marriage one - limited to 50 guests, I knew four of them. Her family paid but I'm told it was expensive. I had nothing to do with planning. I just showed up and posed for the photographer.

Marriage 2.0 happened this year after saying never again. (Wait, was it this year? Crap, it's been a hell of an eventful year.) It was all my design- get married, in a cave, out of town. Zero guests. If nobody is invited, nobody can get offended.

Somehow zero guests got turned into two guests. Eh, it made her happy. I still got my weird cave wedding for cheap.

We got married in Hawaii on the beach with about 15 people. The invite list was simple, we basically just asked our close family and friends if they wanted to go on vacation with us. Worked out great

    That was 11 years ago

We theoretically passed Cooper on the way to a date hike while the kiddo is out of town. Thirteen years married. Still finding space to do what we love. Carson Pass. 20240720_112829.jpg

Text to confirm on the outstanding folks unless it’s someone you secretly don’t really need in attendance. Sometimes people are waiting to the last minute and trying to make it work too. Been there with such things.

    And enjoy!

Uh, since everyone’s sharing, we did ours in a walnut grove. We had to check in on the radio silent people because, yeah, you don’t want your future wife’s massive extended family and all the hordes of cousins “thrice removed” suddenly showing up from upstate NY and not having enough wine to hose them down!

Our daughter got married a couple years ago at a limited seating venue, both for the ceremony and the reception. We had elk loin and grilled salmon. There would be no extra food for people who did not RSVP. We made that clear on the invitation and on several facebook posts. Those that RSVP'd had a great meal and those that didn't watched us eat. Plenty of cake for all. Didn't matter to me.

The venue was a vineyard with great wine, so I didn't worry about extra alcohol. I just made sure I paid for what I would want to take home with me. I think we ended up with 2-4 uncorked bottles which worked out well.

it’s pretty much an easy one, those that haven’t replied, aren’t coming or are no longer invited.

All that said, the future MIL factor, if contributing ducats, can be a fucking clusterfuck of narcissistic fuckery.

NO, your fucking sorority sisters from 45 years ago from the other side of the continent who we've never met are NOT FUCKING INVITED. :crapstorm:

Lol. No issues with the MIL, she's pretty chill. She actually likes me and we get along great. And we're paying for everything ourselves... so not beholden to anyone. To paraphrase Frank Sinatra - We did it our way.

Did it our way too. Immediate family only after a year of bs big weddings for others. 5 or 6 in the same year. Spent all of $150 on cold cuts and cheese, big spenders. And that was 1980 dollars!
