Crazy. The quartz will kill you.

 

That is crazy. No health impacts that we know of but will be interesting to see how it changes with it all gone. We also just ordered some high quality air filters (before we knew there was this much) so that will get the mold counts down too.

I know right. That should be all of it besides what is on the studs. Because of the extent of it I am going to just redo all the studs since we are changing the layout anyways. A little more money but only way to guarantee it's gone.

Home Depot. Probably mistake #1.

 

Our daughter just did quartz countertops for $3,000 in a space approximately that size and did the paint themselves for maybe $250 in materials. With everything done, I bet they have less than $4k in their kitchen remodel with one hard Friday to Sunday of work.

 

That old lath and plaster withstood a complete 3rd floor radiator failure undetected for hours without any structural damage and once it dried out, no signs of mold anywhere. Great old house built in 1905.

i used to be a part of some of their kitchen remodel business. most quotes for kitchen replacements were in the $40-80k range, and that was usually with base-spec cabinets, and fancy counters.

check some of the local smaller shops that do remodels, they'll likely be able to do far better on pricing.

 

Been a minute (about 4 months since our first kiddo was born) since I posted updates on my shower project, but I finally got the large format tile installed.

Just gotta grout it, respray some drywall texture, paint, redo the overhead lighting (switch to the retrofit led lights)...

The wife is outta town with the baby this weekend, so I stand a decent chance of getting that all done!

Quotes on the shower glass doors have been in the $1500-2000 range, so trying to figure out my way around that.

 

Check w North County Glass and Mirror if you haven’t already. They did fine work at the SD house back in the day. Prices may have gone up for everyone though so maybe that’s just what it costs now.

 

Noted. There are a few local (Santee/El Cajon/La Mesa) vendors that I have non-web based inquiries out to. Additionally, have an in with a company that gets tempered glass cut for other reasons, who I might be able to send a .dxf to, and buy the hardware separately, at cost.

We're at the (way over) end of our remodel budget, especially having a kiddo, so custom cut temper glass at cost vs a proven product is highly attractive... I'm real good at measuring, so....

 

We did a fixed pane and no door. Worked fine.

the current master shower in this house is curb less and no glass. The water flows over the linear drain and races to the pocket door / toilet. You have to squeegee mid shower. Totally ridiculous. A shower for not showering in.

I made some quick decorative panels to box-out the inside of the doorway. I say quick because they're just pocket screwed together with a rabbet cut out of the picture frame. The middle panels are glued and tacked in place. No traditional mortise and tenon joinery. The bottom rail of the paneling is actually the baseboard which I thought was a cool design. I saw it on an old-timey piece somewhere and thought it was clean.



This might give a better idea of the construction of them; I dry fit everything before cutting the rabbets in the back. I made a router template to inset my pico remotes for the gallery lighting and room lighting into the center rail.

Basically 3 months start to finish. All that's left is to install hardware, trim-out the room, and paint the walls/ceiling so it cleans up the transition between built-in and the wall/ceiling. I over-painted those areas on purpose because I had planned to cut-in with white paint.

Overall happy with how it turned out. Not my fastest project, but probably my favorite.

Side note: If anyone can recommend a method for installing these latches on cabinet doors let me know. The two parts aren't symmetrical which gives me a bit of anxiety. I might need to make 2 install jigs?

If you decide to paint there are cabinet specific paints that are harder and more durable than latex. I painted some cupboards and used a water based that has an acrylic incorporated with the latex.

 

what i see is that while the outer edge might not be symmetrical, the screw holes are. i would make a template for pilot holes, and everything should line up as intended.

those latches will be going across the vertical part of the dual-opening cabinet doors?

 

agree I did a test cabinet we’re not using that used to be above the fridge and that cabinet specific paint seems to work pretty well. Also thinking a bit on just buying new doors and replacing all the hardware and doors and drawer boxes. I’ve priced that out and it’s wayyyyyy cheaper as well.
