At this point it's probably safe to say the 3rd Gen is a reliable platform. More than a few members here with over 200k on their 3rd Gens with no issues.

I did end up finding a local '15 access cab. Very nice truck, got it for 19,500, pending a check at the mechanics, hopefully tomorrow. The mechanic is an independent, but used to be a tech at a Toyota dealer. My main 2 concerns are major mechanical issues, and rust/rot. Particularly on the frame. Unsure whether Toyota got the frame thing under control by '15. I know my '14 had to go in for them to do something to it regarding the frame problem, but not sure about later years.
    not sure about later years...

They did not. Well, maybe a 'little'.

But with lack of owner attention any frame will eventually rot in salt land.

I would recommend a 2014 TRD off road Quad Cab from Texas (or southern states) with a 6 speed manual tranny and the V6!
What I have described is my truck but it is not for sale! If you can find one like it snatch it up!! I love love love my truck!!!
I added a quick throw shift kit on mine, a cat back and the factory TRD grey rims to match my interior, exterior is white!
Or look for a 2014 Baja!!!
    Good luck brother!

I ended up finding a replacement truck. I had to move heaven and earth to get it brought to my mechanic, and had to entice them to do so. Mechanic said it checked out clean. Caused a huge amount of stress on top of an already stressful day. But now, all I have to do is figure out the transfer.

Thanks much for all the replies!

What's the truck? I was told that you can possibly tune the trans... I know nothing about it, no details, but it was in regard to the '16 & up.

"the mechanic says" is not a good sign. I would ask about a return policy IF you have it a week and it starts shuddering once it warms up and gets used some. Or, ask them for a new transmission and youll take it off their hands. They should not be able to sell that vehicle now that they know this information with a known diagnosed faulty transmission.

I think some of the shift issues are due to the "Intelligence" built into the A750. Drive it around town or commuting back and fourth to work on rural roads mine seems to assume/settle in to a gentle early up-shift to the next gear. Same with the down-shifts: delayed kick-down when giving it some pedal. When I get to an Interstate on-ramp in the last couple of miles and press the pedal to merge because some giant truck is ready to run me over, it momentarily doesn't seem to know what to do: and maybe just unlocks the torque converter to see if that satsifies me? No: Give it more pedal and it will finally kick down hard (sometimes to 4th first, but then wham: down to 3rd if you insist with the pedal, and off we go with the 1GR-FE and the transmission working as a team. The next time you need to do this within a short time, there is no delay: it kicks down immediately, holds it longer, and off you go. Kinda fun! It has (re)-learned what I wanted... but then gradually back to "grandpaw mode" over time.

I can live with this: It's an Aisin (Toyota subsidiary) transmission: i.e.: bullet-proof. They were (are?) Volvo's OEM for years.

I was told a pretty similar version of that by the Toyota dealer when I first bought the truck. As usual, I feel it's a case of "smart" technology not working right. If it doesn't work great, why bother?
