Can someone tell me if the serpentine belt covers all of the ribs of the alternator and steering pump pulleys? I just happened to be under my hood tonight and I saw that 1/2” of the ribs on those pulleys are exposed. Is the belt supposed to be wide enough to cover all pulley ribs?

It looks like you have a belt too thin, as the belt should be wide enough to cover all the ridges on the pulleys. The part number for the 4.0 V-6 engine is 90916-A2001, it’s a cheap part and recommend the actual Toyota replacement using that part number.

    Reserected from the dead.
You look to have lost some ridges.

Time for a new belt ASAP.

Don't do the Continental belt from Auto Zone. It's got a 3 year warranty. I'm on belt #3 and I still have a year left. I'm gonna look into the OEM Belt.

I’m surprised, I changed my belt at 100k on my other Tacoma, it didn’t even look worn. I’ve only got 46k on this one.

Who makes a good belt these days? I’ve always bought Goodyear Gatorbacks but they quit making them.

Are they still easiest replaced from underneath like I did on my ‘06?

I just ordered a Goodyear belt.

Thanks for all of the input. I feel like I dodged a bullet by spotting this and not getting stranded. I personally have never seen a pulley that was not 100% covered by a belt. Now if I can just figure out what’s rattling in the right front with no converter covers, I’ll be happy.

Sometimes a a belt will shred and loose half it's width.. often because one of the pulleys is loose or coming apart, like the harmonic balancer. Pretty rare on tacomas but it does happen. Subaru balancers come apart all the time, it drags the belt forward and it splits in half

All of the pulleys and idlers seem good. I can only guess it’s because my truck sits so much, such as my muffler that just rusted away. Here’s the damage, the noise was the shredded piece wrapped around the pulleys and slapping on the skid plate! Just above the belt, the underside of my hood is coated with rubber dust!
