I ran mine to the small passenger side cubby - I had a lot of line to reach there, I had sealed up most of the cubby area already to keep dust and water out (with a couple small holes to drain the bottom), and really wasn't using it for anything anyways. It's been pretty weather proof thus far, so I may go back and install a filter breather end piece in place of the one-way OEM valve on the end of the line (so there will be less pressure on the seals on the axle when a vacuum is created in the diff)

Sounds like a plan...it seems to me that breaking that vacuum is at LEAST half the battle since that will suck water into the seals eventually regardless of breather location. The other half of course, to get the breather up high.

ARB diff breather…if mounted inside the driver side rear taillight….the only holes you need to drill (comes with self drilling screws..is inside the top section taillight housing ….two screws to hole the filter only…hose is routed in opening with wiring…SIMPLE…

Do it neat like he did and 90% of the techs wouldn't know it's not OE.

Plus it would only matter if you had a diff problem, and it's easily reversible...........

Any water damages may not be cover by warranty…as told to me by the Toyota dealer…
If you do any water crossing, drive highways ,flooded roads, etc.. You may want to do this sooner?

My third member cost me $4,100 to replaced…. Consider the ARB diff air breather? Watch a few videos of the ARB air breather videos..and look who is installing them…! R4T…is one ..many more well known off roaders too..
    Aloha

this is exactly the same tech and design with a replaceable filter… just not ARB branded (which is one piece that is the filter cover that literally snaps on the housing)

On Amazon they sell a knock-off ,copy of the ARB for about $37.00…. ARB diff kit runs about $78.00…. ARB ..just for the hose ,runs for $37.00…
ARB filter is a screw on …not snap on…the fittings of the ARB..looks very high quality! Well made …you can see it and feel the quality!
This ARB diff breather part is protecting your diff from getting water inside, release the pressure, and working with high heats!

Maybe the knock-off might perform the same? And maybe NOT? For $78.00 Real ARB vs $37.00 knock-off ?
I put my trust in ARB reputation! It’s my REAR END!

Are they paying you or something? I would hope they are for all this jibber-jabber. Damn.

Nice clean write up and install @FloridaCementTaco

they both screw on… the cover snaps on and holds the filter in place.

Here’s a side by side… pretty much the same sourced parts just branded differently.

After having the parts lying around for quite a while finally did this mod. Wasn't worried about fording deep water but read/saw to many cases of the OEM vent clogging and the rear brakes being ruined due to gear lube being forced out the axle seals. It was easy and cheap and one less thing to worry about.
Only thing different was i used thick wall silicone tubing. Quite a but more flexible that fuel line..
Used stainless hose clamp and attached to one of the existing exposed bolts with stainless nylock nut.

    Thanks for the write up!
Why did you choose the Dorman 924-284 breather over the OE Toyota 90930-03136 version?

Lmao, he literally stated the reason. Just read it. Edit: or is there a two way breather available from Toyota?? If so then it’s probably expensive without being better.

I routed mine to behind the gas door. Shorter hose run and easily checked for proper operation. Not sure who came up with the behind tail light idea but to me that seems like a real PITA.

The Toyota 90930-03136 breather is not the stock one that screws into the top of the diff... There seems to be much confusion online about whether either of these two (Dorman 924-284 vs Toyota 90930-03136) are actual 2-way breathers.

That toyota breather is the same two way as the Dorman. Its the one you will find under the hood as vents for front diff, auto trans and transfer case.
and both are two way breathers.

    https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/toyota~plug~breather~for~front~differential~90930-03136.html

As to why i located it to the tail light.
#1 that area is supper clean and isn't exposed to water or dirt unlike the inside of the fuel filler door. I never plan on inspecting that anyway. My photo of my install was done after 9 years and didn't need to do any cleaning at all.
#2 no holes to drill. There is easy access to that area from existing passages. And there is a handy bolt inside to clamp it to.

If like me you are worried about it clogging and sending lube into the rear brakes you have the option of just pulling it once in a while and giving it a good soak in some solvent/de-greaser.
If you plan on doing any deep water crossing then a relocate is in order. do it before you do.

You can also disassemble the OEM one, remove the spring and shut off, drill a few holes, and you got one for free.

That would work but very very vulnerable if ever submerged. But would prevent the issue of pressure induced clogging.

If you're submerged up to the top of your taillight, I think you potentially have bigger things to worry about. But granted, this creates an "open breather" that would not close if there was water ingress.

I don't ever expect to be in that deep and this has not introduced water or other moisture in my case. Diff fluid changed a few weeks ago; I've been running this mod for 27k mi.
