Part of me is interested. Part of me says: AW, HELL NO. Not sure I want to know how much I could've put in my 401(k) before I retired. Then again, maybe...

Aw hell, I get a lot of enjoyment out of it, no matter the cost.

Everytime I see your spreadsheet… I just think holy fuck, I think I’m way past this, def closer to op. But I may have made some decisions and changed them (so I've made some poor decisions, I have had 2 camper shells a diamond back and a decked). But then I forget about the little things, not just the unneeded interior trim pieces from ajt, but I’ve bought lots of bolts, new tools, solvents, adhesives, paints and cleaners.

    I’m with you on that.
I think I’m only at about 5k so far, most of that in the last couple of months. Softopper, sliders, skids, front and rear bumpers and a winch. I’ll probably do suspension and call it complete.
Wait, do we count things like a hi lift jack, Viair compressor, traction boards, jerk straps and othe stuff like that?

    No.

if I need a shell I need a shell. Didn’t get it new.

also it actually makes sense. Unlike ricers spending $50k on rice.

can’t afford it? Make it/build it for cheaper.

That's just the truck to be fair.

I have not tallied the amount that I've put in my popup trailer, but it would be a lot. Probably close to the amount I put in the truck. :anonymous:

The Miata only has about a grand of mods in it, between seat lowering kits, interior decor, shift knobs, and carplay conversions. I'm hoping that will be enough.

So I recently got a Bronco and haven’t put that much mods on it yet. But plan to definitely mod it out. My plans are doing a retro theme with Baja accessories like front and back bumpers $1,989, fox shocks $2,400. And for retro I’m doing the Ford letters on a black grill $119, Signature LED bar overlays $30, Bronco script $100-$300, painted roof $1000ish, Bestop squared off fender flares $600. So roughly $6,000.

    This is its status now.
Anyone here have any ideas for me to consider?

    Ha ha lol
I use to have 2 Tacomas a 2010 and a 2012. Don’t get me wrong they were phenomenal trucks but, I have always loved broncos and the path Toyota is going now it’s more reliable since the new tundras are already having blown engine problems. I do love Toyotas but I think they are doing it wrong. They should still keep the V6 in the Tacoma and the V8 in the tundra but put it as an option for the customer.
But a bronco fits my needs as of now because of the off road capability. But maybe in the near future I might get my hands back on another Tacoma.

    but would you have?

that was a major debate on a local fm radio show a while back. one of the dj's quit smoking 4 packs a day 6 months ago at the time they started talking about it. in the area, cigarettes are around $30/pack, so he talked about how not smoking was essentially saving himself $120/day. but he said he hasn't really noticed, only that he's now able to take the girlfriend out for dinner more often, and is able to get some things for himself that he's never been able to afford before. but overall, he doesn't have extra money just sitting around at the end of every week.

the reality is we've all got hobbies and addictions that make life entertaining, and without those, life is far too dull. sure we could all cut things out to save for retirement, but what's the point in living that long if life has to suck so much to get there?

Actually, if it hadn't gone in the 401(k), it would've paid down the mortgage that much more. Getting divorced and basically starting over at 52 changes some of your priorities if you intend on retiring. I retired in Feb.

Like I said, the money spent on all of the mods is being enjoyed. So, in a way, I did put it towards my retirement.

I dunno after the last week I think the mods on my taco have held value better than my 401k. I’m also very scared to add the total up…who knows, it’s fun anyway and can you put a price on that?

4 Duratracs… 1 aluminum cap… “Retro” decal kit… $3,100? I had lots of plans, but after I started using it, I realized it was doing everything I needed it to do. It is in serious need of a brush guard before the paint on the nose gets any worse, but other than that, it’s a pretty capable vehicle, even in SR trim.
