    Edit: SOLD

1L/1.06qt Liquid Gold - Toyota 75W LF Transfer Case Oil - $60 with free shipping in the Continental US.

I bought two cans but only needed one. Use this special fluid to maximize the health and well-being of your transfer case. Looks and smells vaguely like honey (I have not tasted it to confirm). Imported from Japan.

I get it, not criticizing your choice at all because I’m one of those “use OE” for specific applications people as well. However, I think Toyota is off their rocker on this one.
You got a good deal for 60, I think it retails for over 90 for a liter. The Ravenol is the only other choice I found that specifically lists as a replacement for the Toyota stuff. Did you change it yet? I did mine at 60k miles, the oil I drained was as clean as the new oil.

I paid more like $80 at the dealer. I bought two cans because I was convinced the 4Runner needed it too, but when I checked the owners manual it actually just says GL5. I sold the 4Runner to my dad, but I still help with the maintenance and borrow it occasionally.

So I'm selling the remaining can at a discount just to get some money back and free up space in the garage. These transfer cases are easy on the fluid, so it's likely that I'll never have to change it again. And now I don't have to worry about it.

Toyota probably should have just specified MTF.

Damn dealer charging an arm and a leg for this oil. Haha they don’t even use it when you bring your truck in for service, instead they use the Ravenol.

    good price, glws

Do you use this stuff for crawling or everyday, winter driving? More expensive than Amsoil.

I doubt the dealer even uses Ravenol. Probably just the same GL5 as the front and rear diffs.

There are plenty of other threads discussing the merits of this stuff. My takeaway is that it's not the viscosity that really matters, but the additives. The tcase has some brass parts (synchros?) that could be damaged by the sulfur in GL5 oil. 75W LF doesn't have sulfur, but it has more anti wear additives than typical MTF. Ultimately does it matter? Hard to say without talking to the Toyota engineers who decided it was necessary (and spent the money to have this stuff made to custom spec). Older trucks used essentially the same tcase with GL5 with minimal issues, and the dealer puts in who knows what with no apparent issues, so it probably doesn't really matter. But maybe Toyota had a good reason to switch? I wonder if the 4th gen is still using 75W LF?

Edit: just downloaded a 2024 owners manual, and they are still using 75W LF.

    THIS ^^^^^

When I asked the parts office about purchasing a can, they said they would have to order it. I asked what they did, and the tech told me they get in bulk. I know that’s not true, so it tells me they’re using the same across the board. They have bottles of pretty much every other fluid available…
