Hey guys it’s been a while. My trans in my 05 blew 2 months ago on the beach. It’s toast.
In the meantime I had to bite the bullet and got a 21 DCSB SR5 so I can fit a car seat (yes I checked, can fit comfortably enough)
But now I’m stuck with what to do with the 05. Love the truck have had it for 12 years. Has 206k. New frame 2016.
    Options are:
    1. Toyota certified trans 5200$ including install
    2. Sell it not running?
    3. Find a used trans which has been very difficult. I’m in south jersey. Closest one is 2 hours away for 1750$
I’ve seen some websites (B&R Auto wrecking) has about 8 in stock with 90 day warranties, even with shipping from Oregon to nj I’m looking at 1350$. plus a 950$ install.

Leaning towards option 3. Wouldn’t hesitate if I could pick up a trans from somewhere close in person. Just seems sketchy to have one shipped across the country. Thoughts??

A local transmission shop where I live would rebuild it for $2000-$2500. Be good as new. Buying a used one is a crapshoot. It might last 6 months before you need to do it over again. Or it could last 16 more years. That's what I plan to do if mine ever goes out. But I don't know what your options are. I'd be talking to local independent transmission shops though to find out.

With option #1 is that quote from a dealer?

The transmission on my sons 2010 Nissan Sentra died a few years ago at 100,000 miles. Nissan knew they had issues and extended the warranty to 120,000 miles on some vehicles. My son's car didn't qualify even though it was the same transmission. Nissan wanted $5K to install a new transmission. The local shop that I use installed the same transmission for $2900. They literally drove over to the Nissan dealer who quoted me $5000 and picked up the same transmission from them and installed it for almost 1/2 the price.

It literally blew up so you can't get a rebuild?

Option 1 was from a local shop, he said he doesn’t rebuild older Toyota trans because it’s tough to get some of the parts and could be stuck halfway done a job. The shop is reputable but I’ll call around outside the area today. I was reversing in the sand, but there was a loud bang and an abrupt stop. Reverse turned into neutral and won’t shift past first gear
