I saw that - wasn't sure if I should be impressed or terrified - probably 50/50.

Got to say the dude is probably the coolest grandpa on the block from the kids point of view.

 

I bet his homeowners insurance doesn't know about it....or that may be why it's for sale

 

We have had rain several evenings in the last week & a good hours worth today so far.

Between today through Friday it could be up to 4". Would help knock out some of the drought conditions.

 

Here is a small test I have been monitoring.

Back when I was working on the Subaru I sprayed a heavy coat of Fluid Film (L) and Cosmoline (R) side by side on this rusted car hood.



The only prep was to wipe the surface with a clean rag. This is horizontal so it gets full weather exposure.

You can see the Cosmoline is still there while the Fluid Film is gone.

 

It’s always a plus to be able to create your own better than new replacement parts

 

We used Fluid Film as a light lube at work for years. It's fine for regularly maintained pivot points, etc. Back in the early 2000's when we first found out about it, a few of us sprayed our trucks with it, which was a waste of time (except inside doors and crevices). When I decided to spray the Tacoma, I bought rp-342 a cosmoline based product, which has held up much better.

 

I’ve liked post that were made years ago and some have liked posts I made years ago and forgot I made.

I think it’s all part of being part of the community here.

Ugg, I’m thinking of the damage recently done in the St Johnsbury/Lydonville area of VT. Just T-Storm watches, maybe warnings, and the place got hammered. No named storms or remnants involved.

Be mindful and careful where you are, same goes wherever anyone is.

Today on Past Tech with Rusty we have the fuel metering device that got it done until the mid 1980's - a carburetor.



More specific, a Ford model 4100 four barrel carburetor on the 352 cubic inch engine ( 5.8 liter for the folks) in the 66 LTD.

The car ran - pretty much like crap but it did run, turns out the previous owner while a nice guy wasn't much on carburetors .

Younger Wrenchmen might not know - that dark flapper thing dead center in the photo above is the choke plate, it needs to shut so the engine will start when cold - it didn't...

So I adjusted the black round thing on the left side - it contains a bi-metallic spring that moves as it heats or cools moving the choke plate. Like so:




Well, now it will close but not open -- which explains why it was so far out of adjustment...

These are called "hot air" chokes - common on old Fords, they pull air through a tube adjacent to the exhaust manifold and into the spring box (round thing) to heat it up.
See that white cloth covered thing? (probably asbestos, it was 1966 )


That is the tube, vacuum is applied at the spring box to pull the heat - the tube wouldn't get warm - because the clean air side was connected to the intake manifold instead of the port on the carburetor.



Notice the heater hose held against the spring box and the shield to block the cold air from the fan from hitting the spring box. Both of these are to help keep the choke full open in cold weather.

In addition to the incorrect vacuum piping every adjustment was miles off specification, I went for a drive - much less bad.
By the time I got back to the garage it would even idle semi smoothly in gear - progress.

I stopped at the farm stand and got a dozen ears of fresh corn for $6 too.

I've got one of those car-you- rate-ers on my '79 RX-7

seems to be working still, but I worry about the gas-o-hol chewing up the insides.

 

That feature sounded complicate from its design to its upkeeps. It would be much simpler to convert to electric heating element for the choke system I think.
