Want to add tiedowns such as these to restrain dogs. Are these bolts (image below) only secured to the plastic, or are there reinforcing elements behind the plastic? For example, could we use self-tapping sheet metal screws on this bed as long as we do not drill into other things behind the bed?

Our Toyota dealer did not know the answer to this!

There is a threaded bar that acts as a backing washer. You will need one of those. However, those are not for restraining dogs, ever, and the reasons why are numerous. Use a crate that is rated for travel, and strap that to the bed.

I could never chain a dog to an opened truck bed. If something happens, those animals are toast. Get some quality crates and secure them well. But then again, what the hell do I know.

Worst story I ever came across here was about someone that leashed their dogs to the interior of the open bed and left them there while they went off to do some activities (kayaking maybe?) in a nearby river, and came back to their two dogs having jumped out of the bed without enough leash to reach the ground, hung by their collars. Awful, awful stuff, some poor passerby at least had the decency to cut them down before the owner returned.

For securing a crate? Fine. But don't ever restrain a dog directly to the bed like that.

Everyone has the right to feel or have an opinion anyway they want. For me the truck bed is for cargo. The cab is for every living thing I care about (see my signature picture to the left).

I have three dogs between 55 and 65 pounds each. They have never stepped foot in a truck bed.

Sorry guys, I assumed this was for ranchers, not CitySlickers. These are working dogs rotated between parcels, weekly. 1,000+ acres of dirt roads...we never hit the pavement. I would NEVER crate these dogs under these circumstances. You ever have a dog covered in carrion in your cab?

My dog rides in the bed when off road. You should be fine. Either go short on the leash or long enough to reach the ground.

I’m guessing you have healers or aussies. If so I don’t think they could pull those attachment point out. I would would say use a short tie down or a long one in case they jump out the truck they won’t hang themselves.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
Having that information upfront would've been nice. You left that wide open for people to second-guess WTF you were going to do. We can't read your mind.

Yeah, might have been smart to lead with this bit of information as we city slickers are pretty fucking stupid! Honestly if this is what you do with your working dogs, then why chain them to the bed at all? Train them to stay in the bed until you give them a command to get out. A dog will do whatever you train it to do.

I'll get the part number for the official toyota d ring if you want it (have a bunch in a bin in my shop). My truck came with them in the front lower corner, I assume it was a dealer installed option. The backing plate along with the composite material is likely able to handle 100 lbs or more. Not as secure as a D ring through the bed bolt but good enough.

Also, there is a relatively new product for tiedowns off the bed bolts just posted here, I'll try to dig that one up too if you prefer. Not sure how reachable that location would be for an open bed since I have a shell on my truck.

ETA: Versatrax link for bed bolt tiedowns (super nice design)

ETA: Link to photos of the OEM D Ring backing plates I use for my mini stiffies, will dig up the part number later today.
