I shoot for about once a month and miles vary. I take it out on forest service roads and engage 4h. Usually down to 4l and locker to make sure it works on gravel or dirt in a straight line.

Like the manual said, you may have to roll forward or backwards to engage 4l as this happens to me sometimes.

Agree with others about once per month for 5-10 miles on a straight dry section of road near me, same distance in a rain storm. Also, every once in a while just sitting still in the driveway with the truck running, I turn the selector dial back and forth through each setting 3-4 times to each position to work/exercise the actuators on the transfer case and front diff.

The final one always feels a little smoother and less noise when the front diff connects and disconnects.

Those vintage wiper contacts inside the actuators really benefit from doing this and the once per month runs with 4wd engaged help warm things up to drive any moisture out of the diffs and transfer case.
