Did My Sony Receiver Downgrade My Tacoma’s Rear-View Camera? - Was I ripped off?

I recently upgraded my 2016 Tacoma with a Sony Digital Multimedia Receiver to get features like Apple CarPlay. However, the rear-view camera quality has significantly dropped. It's now extremely pixelated with a noticeable delay in light exposure. I can’t see anything clearly when backing up in dark or shaded areas, and bright light washes out the image completely.

The installers claimed the quality should be the same, but I’m experiencing:
    • Pixelation
    • Significant delay in light adjustment
    • Poor visibility in varying light conditions
Their explanations have ranged from "all backup cameras look like that" to "Toyota has a special chip for clearer images," and finally, that my camera is too low quality for the new screen.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Did I get ripped off with the Sony receiver (retail $850)? Do I need to upgrade my backup camera, or is there another solution? Any advice would be appreciated!

Toyota cameras are awful (at least for sure pre-2020)
New screen is much higher resolution, and crappy camera looks even worse on it.

I know in my Pioneer I can adjust the picture settings for the camera inputs, so you may have that option as well to help with the dark/light images

If the screen size is larger than the already bad quality is going to get even worse and more pixelated as it's blown up. Are you able to resize the display for the camera?

I installed a 10" Kenwood receiver. Same thing. The OEM camera is pretty low resolution, the larger screen made it much worse.

you don't specify your sony head unit model, but everything that went on in this thread applies.

of note, he posted a video, which shows the camera quality he has, and while it's not great, it's what the truck has. you would need to change the camera and wiring for a higher resolution model that must be compatible with your head unit. i know for sure that kenwood and alpine offer higher resolution backup cameras, i don't know that sony or pioneer do.
