Question about OEM LED headlight for sale

I came across a local listing for an OEM LED headlight (just one, new in box). How can I tell if it’s a true Toyota factory light? Will it say Toyota on it somewhere?

That's an OEM. It's a TRD PRO one too. Should say TOYOTA on it somewhere if I remember right

 

I dunno, but your thread title might not get much attention,, unless someone is looking to buy. You may change it to get more traffic, it sounds like you are selling, not identifying.

I just bought some used off FB Marketplace, so I was dealing with the same issue when looking at listings. The back of the housing will be marked with Toyota and say made in Mexico next to each other.

That light does not look "new in box" to me. Looks dirty and scratched like one that's been installed for a while.

Do you need just one light, or are you planning to source another to match it? If you do want to buy it I would suggest finding a way to test the light for functionality before handing over any cash.

 

and make sure tabs on the backside are not broken and/or repaired.
I have read more than a handful of times folks getting stuck with repaired assemblies. Apparently the mounting tabs break easily, I am sure in accident, but maybe in shipping as well?

From looks I’d agree TRD pro headlight. You can tell because it says TRD and the chrome is blacked out. For me easiest way to tell is by looking at the back of the housing. It should only have one plug location.

It for sure has a broken top tab. Sounds sketchy if they are saying it’s new in box. 100% need to test before buying

 

for sure! I would agree, if the seller specifically stated this was "new in box" or something of that nature, that is just not true, and I wouldn't even do business with a leir,,, regardless of price.

Ideally looking for both lights to upgrade from factory halogens. But not in any hurry to do so, it’s an expensive upgrade.

 

daveeasa sells the harness for TRD Offroad, Puppypunter sells the harness for SR/Sport. Put "@" in front of their name to get their attention.

Some of them look like OEM but are cheap knockoffs. Here's an example that looks vaguely like your image.

If it is "new in box" it should come in a box just like this...




These are the TRD Sport/Off-Road model but the TRD Pro should be packaged the same with the part number and labels on the box. The packaging should be the same too.

 

Just stipulating but the FB seller probably got a warranty replacement because it (knock of) quit working. So rather than pop it in, they decide to put it back to stock rather than having another one die again. They're selling it as "OEM" and probably for similar price they paid for both knock-offs to get their money back (looks like ~$400) and run.

Replacement from a dealer wouldn't be shipped to someone; it would be installed for warranty purposes.

Light sitting on top of a sealed box is probably the busted one they pulled off and never opened the replacement box. I could be wrong but just in case, I'd do a hard pass.

As for the lights.

From the pictures all tabs look to be in good shape although hard to tell on the inside upper that mounts behind the grill. The top inside tab is JUST visible but looks to be there. The inside (grill) ones break in accidents, same with the lower outer tab. The top two tabs tend to break from use or big hits (and somewhat from car accidents).

I agree that those look FAR from new. Not sure if there is a way to easily run these on a test bench. @daveeasa would be able to tell you that.

 

Buy from a reputable dealer. Unless it’s $100 or so.

Another way to tell between OEM and knock-offs is the number of LED reflectors. From the knock-offs I have seen, they only have 3 Low Beam, and 1 High Beam reflectors. OEM has 5 Low Beam and 2 High Beam reflectors.
