Keep them, though the insurance company will want them. My father had his ‘67 El Camino stolen and spotted it on a used car lot in Hollywood a few weeks later on an elevated ramp. Even though he turned his keys, my brother had a spare set. He grabbed my brother’s keys, unlocked the door, started it, and began to back it down the ramp. Long story short the cops were called and the vehicle was impounded and proven to be his truck.

I mean, how often does somebody get their vehicle stolen? Most people have probably never thought through this scenario.

Roughly 1 million vehicles are stolen in the US annually.

People hardly ever stop to think through most problems these days. Critical thinking is becoming a lost art.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
I'd also consider moving with/without keys if you live in an area where this sort of stuff is happening.

@manamannat you should hold on to them. Your insurance company will ask for them back, when they pay you out. Had a motorcycle stolen in the spring, before they paid up, they asked for the keys to be sent to them. GEICO said that the added costs of modern key fobs makes them loose money at auction if they have no keys at sale.

Did the check include the cost of the key?

No it costs them money on the auction vehicle. They loose 1-2 grand if no keys at sale.

I know this is going to sound crude, and it's not directed at you but...

why do I give any fucks about GEICO or any insurance company profits?

Tow company I worked for charged for towing the vehicle with out a key. The key could be provided by anyone anytime time the tow bill was paid, most of the time insurance would pay the fee.

IDK how many times vehicles were towed for reasons other than a crash, the driver is there and don't want to turn over the keys. I only want the key so I don't have to pick up your vehicle everytime I need to move it around the yard.
Some zip codes have seen over a 400% increase in auto thefts this year.

Post some flyers at your local metal recycling facility. Let the thieves know they forgot the keys. Pay it forward!

Because in the end it just make everyone pay more, for the same crappy insurance that we all complain about. I know I paid and pay a shit ton for insurance, with a clean record and no thefts or claims in the last 33 years of driving . And really don't want to pay more. Hope that justifies it a lil bit for ya.

also, if insurance paid out for the vehicle, technically, the OP is absolved of any legal responsibility to even recover the vehicle. official ownership would fall to the insurance company--that was the reason for the payout. they 'bought' the truck.

i would contact the insurance and ask them what they want done. they may want the keys, but more than likely, will just want you to dispose of them via safe channels like electronics recycling.

How ? what happened? and yea look for it at Copart and Auction, get police involved. I am sure you have plenty of pics of your truck, it won't be hard to match it if it pops up somewhere.

My advice is to not to deal with it yourself. Whoever did it likely has a gun and has not much to lose in his life, you do i am sure, so let the police deal with him.

Also posting pics of your truck here might help too, after all all of us look at literally every tacoma that is in our sights

Probably not, the insurance company does everything they can to pay you as little as possible.
