So I have a water softener I have found a nice home for right near my meter/water main as it enters my house. It's in a spot that allows me to soften the water right before my manifold and water heater as well, but also allows me to keep the irrigation lines un-softened.

Only problem with this is it is across the basement from the slop sink. I didn't want to toss it into my sump pit because I worry about the salt water damaging the sump pumps. So my thought was, ok I'll run it up into the rafters, put it into pex and use that to get it over to the slop sink (about 30-40ft as the crow flies, more if running it through joist bays).

The total distance from the head of the brine tank to the rafters where it will enter the pex is only about 2ft. Owner's Manual says, "...can be run a max of 7ft overhead..." and "if running drain line more than 20ft linear, recommend increasing hose to 3/4 inch"

If I understand this correctly, I see no problem with my idea. Anyone have experience doing something similar? The hose the softener came with is about 5ft so I have to abandon it almost immediately and happen to have an absolute shit load of extra pex from when I ripped out all the original leaky plumbing.

    Thanks for the insights

You are good. I put in one about 5 years ago that went up 6 feet then across the whole house into the drain stack. It traveled about 75 horizontal feet. The drain water is still at house pressure which should be around 50psi.

I had this exact problem with my house. Water softener is right off the well pressure tank in the front of the home. Main line is at the back. Previous installer just used 1/2" ID plastic tubing and ran along the floor joist. Over time it kinked and sagged, causing issues. Not to mention it was installed without a trap and managed to backflow down into the sump pump, which should have never been connected to the septic anyways.

I tied into the drain with a trap and went 3/4" PVC within 15-20 feet of the softener.

I know you're supposed to have an air gap installed here, but I couldn't get one in time.
